Couple of questions about Baseball from a Novice

Bear with me lads....but as a complete illiterate when it comes to baseball card collection I have a couple
of queries for you, the enlightened masses vis a vis Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial.

First.....why is the Topps 52 card considered his real rookie card versus the 51 Bowman??? To my accounting mind way
of thinking, 51 precedes 52 and thus that should be his true rookie card?? Yes...I told you these would be airheaded
questions but I am really interested in this....I have been monitoring the prices of the 51 bowman and 52 topps and their
is no comparison!!??? What is the deal.......is it that the 52 is more rare? A nicer card perhaps? How did it offically supplant
as the true rookie card or is it not considered the true rookie card but simply more admired??? Please someone explain
the dynamics of this situation to this greenhorn?

Secondly.......and this one is short....what is considered the true Stan Musial card??? I see quite a few different versions
from 48 but I am clued out here.......Thanks........

The 1951 Bowman is Mickey's rookie card. Although his 1952 Topps card is much more valuable and popular, it's NOT his rookie card, no matter how many times it is erroneously said so on Ebay auctions and the like.

  • Oh okay....thanks Estil......now why is though that the 52 topps is far far more valuable? Is that simple
because of scarcity??? Or just the collectors taste over the years? I do not understand why thier
is such a large gap between these 2 cards?

    Thanks

Obviously, the TOPPS card was printed after his "rookie year."
BUT, if it was the first card to contain his "rookie stats," an
    argument could be made.............

90% of it has to do with it being his Topps debut. When Topps came out it was evidently considered superior to Bowman. That would be why Bowman stopped producing cards after 1955. So it is his Topps "Rookie"and therefore much more valuable.

I think TOPPS bought Bowman. Both to kill the competition
and to get the exclusive license that Bowman had on the
    Mantle image.

Yeah i think thats right. I wonder why they ever decided to start printing under the bowman name again....

Musial's first mainstream rookie card is the 1948 Bowman #36. Before that issue Musial has a 1947 Exhibit card, a 1947 W602 card and a Cuban issue from 1946.
  • Thanks Aro...appreciate it....anyone know what a PSA 8 of that Musial rookie goes for roughly?

    Thanks
