I was going to ask what was going on here. I saw that rise late
this afternoon after the Kitco close in NY. Then of course it is earlier

Towards the end of most months, the settling of various options

can cause sharp movements in metals, that in the long run, are not

very meaningful in the trend line.

I see rising platinum prices as a double-edged sword for those of us interested in trading the platinum coins. A rise in the price of the base metal will certainly bump up prices of the relatively high-mintage earlier proofs, and could possibly even raise prices of the 2006-w unc issues.

OTOH, this metal is pretty high priced already, which has likely been the major factor behind declining sales of Mint issues. If platinum goes high enough, it could conceivably be that the 2007 issues will replace 2006 as the new keys -- or even that the Mint will do away with platinum sales altogether, which isn't going to do much for interest in the existing issues.

The 1/10, 1/2 and half ounce platinums will remain fairly

within in reach, of folks of moderate means. The 1 oz, may

either become the peac*.oks tongue of Mint collectables, or

the Dodo Bird, doomed for extinction.

You think? I think the opposite might be the case.

I wouldn't be surprised by either outcome. I was thinking along the lines of current interest in 2, 3, 20 cent pieces... but on the other hand the plat proofs and unc-w's do have different reverses, which makes the whole plat series more than just one major type coin.
