If you had 2K to spend, what would you buy?

I though this might be fun. If you had $2,000 to spend, what would you buy? I know this is not a lot of cash to some, but for most it would be fun to think about. I am going to be real specific:

1) PSA 5 1967 Tom Seaver ($265) - Working on getting 30 of the top cards and this is one I still need. I am collecting PSA 6, 7 and 8, but will have to settle for 5, due to the cost.

2) PSA 6 1968 Nolan Ryan ($250) - Also need this for my top 30 from 1968.

3) PSA 5 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle ($800) - Not collecting cards from the set, but this is my favorite Mantle.

4-7) PSA 6 1968 Mays, Brock, Frank Robinson and PSA 7 Morgan (about $95). These are 4 of the last 5 I need to get to 30 Superstars and HOFers for that year.

8) PSA 6 1967 Rod Carew ($140) - See #1.

9) PSA 6 1967 Brooks Robinson ($135) - See #1

10-12) PSA 6 1967 Jim Palmer, Tony Perez and PSA 7 1967 Gaylord Perry (about $75) - The last three I need to get to 30 for 1967.

13) 1971 PSA 7 Jim Palmer ($20) - The last one I need for 30 from 1971.

14) 1977 PSA 8 Rollie Finers ($10) - The last one I need for 30 from 1977.

15) 1979 PSA 8 Willie Stargell ($18) - I am not sure what this card would go for. It is rarely offered in PSA 8. I would probably even settle for a 7.

16) 1963 PSA 5 Mickey Mantle ($180) - I am primarily collecting the top 30 in 6 or 7 from this year, but I think I can get a nicely centered 5 for about $180.

17) I would spend my last $12 on PSA 8 and 9's to complete my tops 30 run for Topps Sets from 1980-1985. I could probably grab 2 or 3 cards.

There you have it. With the exception of the 1952 Mantle, I plan to get all of these cards in the next year to year to two years. What would you buy?

I'd probably blow it all on one or two cards. Maybe a T206 Demmitt (St. Louis) or a couple nice T215's. I could also live with a presentable E93 Cobb if I could get one at that price.

Rip, that is a great choice, unfortunately, I don't have the discipline to buy one card. I would certainly consider buying a PSA 5 Aaron, Clemente, Kaline, Banks or Koufax rookie though.
  • Ken Griffey Jr. game worn Reds home vest---$1000.

Andruw Jones' game used BP bat from the late 90's when he used to write "F@CK YOU BALL" on it---$500

Edgar Renteria game used Braves bat---$200

Julio Franco game worn 2005 road Braves jersey---$300

    1963 Pete Rose RC - PSA 8
It's a lot of money for an ugly card, but it's Charlie Hustle's RC.

Change would be used to fill out my sets.

    JS,

I agree about the Rose being ugly. In fact, when I seriously start building my top 30 cards from 1963, I may omit the Rose and Stargell. I just can't justify spending $350-$400 even for a 5. His 1964 card is so much nicer. I wish it was his true rookie.

You may be better off buying one this week. I think Best Buy has no interest until 2010 on all TVs $999 and up. That's nearly three full years without interest. It'd be tough to find a better deal...

    AJW,

We were going to look at the ads this week and make a decision to buy or wait. Thanks for the tip on the best buy deal.

  • I'd probably try to find something really old and then regret wasting my money on it.
  • 1952 Topps Roy Campanella and Jackie Robinson in PSA 4-5.
  • Well considering that 2 Mickey Mantle 56 Topps PSA 8's this week went for about 2300 each...I think I would
try and get that beautiful card....

First, I'd get the very best raw (NRMT-MT) 1974-77 sets possible (1978 & 1979 are on order), then 2005, 2006, 2007 Topps, then 1996 & 1997 Finest silver, then 1981-95 Topps Traded, 1984-95 Fleer Update, then all the 1993 Fleer and 1993 Ultra insert sets, and then enough Ultra-Pro binders/pages to hold them all. You think $2000 will be enough for all that (these are all baseball, all complete sets)?
