He is good, but i'd take Chuck. Then again, a fight between those two would come down to what format they used (pride or UFC).

  • ...........women's basketball.................soccer..............open wheel racing................you know where I'm going with this, don't you? UFC, Pride.....whatever! They will gain a little popularity and then fizzle out before you know it. You could walk down the street one day and ask people about this sport and probably 9 out of 10 people would tell you they never even heard of it before.

It's just not going to be a mainstream sport. Back to the original video.........a guy like that just doesn't impress me. He reminds me of the meathead frat boys at college that get drunk and want to start a fight with everyone. It's always fun to see them get dropped!

UFC is way more watched than boxing now. I dont know how old you are but im guessing 40+ and you hate change. If you get a chance look around your nearest big city, there is probably fights there on occasion. Not the big boys, but pros. Things change, boxing is out, UFC/Pride is in. Maybe it wil be a fad, but it isnt going anywhere anytime soon.

Edited to add: You do realize soccer is the most popular sport in the world right? And i would bet that open wheel racing has many more fans worldwide than NASCAR. Some fads huh?

  • bigfische.........I'm assuming you're in the United States. The reason soccer and open wheel racing are more popular in the rest of the world is because the rest of the world doesn't have the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, colllege football, college basketball.............

As far as boxing being out and UFC being in..........if boxing was out, it wouldn't be on ESPN every Friday night and it wouldn't be shown on HBO and Showtime. UFC is getting higher ratings than ever before, because it's new and people want to check it out. I bet the average male could list far more professional boxers than he could ultimate fighters. Once that reverses, then maybe it has a chance.

  • Mr.Peter- the reason soccer is popular is it is a rather inexpensive sport to play...

You do know that espn show World's Strongest Man nearly every night. I doubt anyone would try to say that that makes it a popular sport. I do not think you are totally wrong, eventually UFC will die down, but its already been around for many years, this is not the XFL or that basketball game with trampolines, it has a stornger backbone than that.

Edited to say: yes i am in Amereica. Also, spike tv shows UFC a few times a week and FOXsports (midwest atleast) shows Pride a few times a week.

FSN shows Pride here in the Mid-Atlantic(DC) as well, usually a few nights a week. K-1 is on Espn 2 a few nights a week as well.

  • The difference between the Friday night boxing and the rest......the boxing is taking place at that time. All the rest are replays of events that already happened. Sometimes those Strongman or K1 or whatever else are from as far back as five years ago.

I guess every sport has it's own audience!
  • Vitali Klitschko is back.....coming out of retirement to fight again for the Heavyweight title. See, that made the front page of ESPN as soon as it happened. I don't recall seeing anything about UFC..........I guess boxing is back!!!

Yes, Vitali is coming back. He's fighting Oleg Maskeav. The reason it made frontpage on most sports-related pages, is 2 years after retiring, he's coming back for a Championship bout(WBC Heavyweight). Now, that either says the sport is still popular, or just heavily illustrates how dull and nonnewsworthy the heavyweight division is overall. This coming from a fan of the Klitschko's, although I'm a bigger fan of Wladimir. Been watching his career since the 96 Atlanta Olympics.

Count me as a 30 year boxing fan who is starting to prefer UFC to 90% of the boxing on tv. While nothing beats an evenly matched boxing match between two good fighters, the quality of the average fight has dropped noticeably. To me the average UFC bout is preferable, and good UFC bouts seem to occur with more frequency than good boxing matches. It is a good product. Real good in person too - I went to a nice card at the Mandalay during Superbowl weekend two years ago that was stellar.

  • I think too much emphasis is put on the heavyweight division. The real action is in the lighter weights. I'm with you on being a bigger fan of Wladimir. I thought he was pretty much done when Corrie Sanders crushed him, but he battled back in his career. The heavyweight division needs a spark.......another Mike Tyson! I'm still hoping Lennox Lewis comes out of retirement so we can finally see him and Klitschko go at it again.....hopefully without Vitali's eye falling out again!! hahaa
