Why is the '72 Double Die Cent included in the '72 Mint Set Registry?

Why is the '72 Double Die Cent included in the '72 Mint Set Registry? There are many other Double Die dates that are not included in their respective year mint sets. For example, the '55 Double Die is more well known and it is not included in the '55 Mint Set. Also, why is the
'72-S 40% Silver Ike included in this set. This was not a circulating issue. Can this be changed?

  • That is one hell of point you've got there.

That is an expensive inconsistency. '72 Double Die in MS66RD approximately $1300
  • Maybe some dealer who sells lots of them asked pcgs to put it there? Probably it's just pcgs being inconsistent as usual. I wish the 1982 No mint mark dime wasn't part of the Roosevelt set, and the 94,97 sms nickels weren't part of the nickel and mint sets. I will not put these coins in my collection.

I was looking at the 1864 Mint Set and noticed it had a Large Motto and Small Motto, and L on Ribbon. Wouldn't those be considered varities? Perhaps they included them to save making a varities set.

I'm sure there are many more examples. I just happened to be looking at this one.

  • Those 1864 varieties are major design changes and should be part of any basic set. The DDO's are error coins and should be optional.
  • The varieties are what make the 1864 mint set fun!
