modern collection...

i had a friend of my daughter's contact me last night about selling his cards. said he had some nice items (jordan rookie, montana's, etc...) but didn't know what he wanted for them. i went over to look at them, taking my 5x magnifier as well. he did have a jordan. i've never seen a counterfeit before...until now. amazing how noticeable they are in comparison to legit 86s. i told him i was no professional but imo it was counterfeit and i suggested he have it slabbed (or attempted so he could hear 'counterfeit' from a professional). he did have montana's and marinos but nothing other than regular issued cards. most everything he had was new stuff. he had lots of lebron's, autos, patches, refractors, etc... his dad then comes in the room talking about everything he has and how much everything is worth...AND how they can 'finger' the patch and auto cards from the packs. at this point i'm becoming very uninterested in this collection...eventhough he does have what appears to be some nice modern cards. i offered to sell a few of his auto and patch cards to see the 'real' value rather than the beckett value that he and his dad keep referring to each time they hand me a card to look at. i also took a few psa slabbed cards to give them an idea of a 9 vs 10 and how subjective the grading can be. yes, most of the cards they had were 'MINT' to them (as i like to think most of mine are MINT as well
) and when i showed them a few corner flaws they began to see the difference. all of his 'rare' cards were in screw down holders with the inset for cards and after taking the cards out, the majority had corner wear. again, he did have some other nice patch, refractor and auto cards that i may eventually help him sell.
sorry to just ramble but thought i would share my experience. i was initially very excited to help this kid (21-year old) and just left kind of hanging my head (after the cards his dad started showing me his hot wheels, antiques and cookie jar collection and was wanting to know what they were all worth....).
i didn't like being the bearer of bad news... however, i did help him pick 10 cards to send to beckett and i took 6 with me to send to PSA.

That would be about that time that my offer to help would end. I'm not a big fan of pack searchers.
no, i was anticipating more mid 80s stuff (i.e. clemens, mcgwire, bird, jordan, etc...)...nothing earth shattering. like i said earlier, he is a friend of my daughter so when she heard he had cards she mentioned me to him. he is wanting to sell his cards and buy some land so i told him i'd look at what he had and see if i could help him. i didn't realize he wanted to sell everything at once. i convinced him to get a few graded and go from there. i'm going to mention the collection to a friend and see if he can give him better insight on what he has. i'm really not the one he needed for the modern stuff.
Thanks,
