OT-Don't buy Ryobi...

I'm in the residential renovations business, as some of you know. Mainly kitchen and baths. I had just finished renovating my friends kitchen(new cabinetry, flooring, and we'd began to order new appliances) 2 weeks ago; well his home caught fire a few days back. His roommate nearly died in the fire; as the whole downstairs was reduced to ashes. The cause of the fire, overheated Ryobi battery charger. Which, had just been plugged in that day. So yeah, 4000 dollar cabinets, 1000 worth of tile down the drain. Not to mention basically the rest of his house. Yes, he's compiling what he needs to file a lawsuit. Literally, I was flying back up there in about a months time to redo his downstairs bathroom and family room. We're moving out to Cali together with some ladies we know(he's getting stationed in San Diego), so at the very least he doesn't have to worry about selling his house anymore. Once again, Don't Buy Ryobi. I never have owned any personally(I stick to Dewalt and Hitachi), and now I never will. Thankfully, only his roommate was at home at the time and he got out relatively unscathed.

  • Sorry to hear your story.
Damn, are you talking about the Ryobi battery charger for the drills? Just got one of those for X-mas.
Sure it wasn't a plug in or something else? Would think there might be a recall.
    Thanks for the heads up.

Which item was it? I have a planer, router and a drill from Ryobi...not by choice image Only the drill has the battery
  • I've been using Ryobi ever since they first came out as one of the first to use the 18 volt battery and never had a problem with them. I dont think the battery charger was overheated but the battery itself which shouldnt be left in the charger for long periods of time. Any rechargable battery left in for long periods of time runs the same risk...

Well, like I said all that really matters was no one got seriously injured. Yes, the battery charger that is included in the "bag combo" from Ryobi. I'll get the details, but I know my friend had purchased this only back in December 2006 when I went up to his place to renovate. So, more than likely those same models are sitting in your local Lowe's, Home Depots, etc.

RepubMass-The battery was from the drill(same battery is used on the flashlight, saw-zaw, and circular saw that is included in the bag combo).

This is a heads up to everyone. I'll be sure to post the exact specs(so you can AVOID it) of what battery charger it was.

Are you sure it was the charger and not a problem with the electrical outlet?

The fire inspector said it was the charger. Also, knowing that the outlet was in use regularly, I don't suspect it being the outlet.
