Recommendations for a Coin Reward

I just got a set of orders to proceed into Iraq for hopefully just a week or two tops. Everytime I go into the war zone I buy myself something that I wouldn't normally buy myself because of cost. I'm actually stumped right now on what to get.

I'd like to get something that serves as a reminder of the trip this time. Any coins or medals (non military, I've already got them the hard way) that might depict a trip into a war zone. Civil War coins? (NOTE: That is NOT a political statement), WW2 type coins, war nickels, etc.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? My small brain can only think of a couple things, like war nickels.

They won't give me a gun. This is no big deal. Fly into a major base, do my job, go home. I've done this several times. Every once in a while they talk about going out the gate to do something, and I'll go if that's what they want but I don't have to like it.

It's my pleasure and honor to go work with the Marines on the ground over there. Despite how it sounds it's challenging, and fun, and exciting.

And besides I've conned everybody, including myself, to believe I deserve an expensive gift upon return.

    Gettysburg classic commem half?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Since your a Sac guy, think about trying to acquire a Denver mint appreciation dollar. My pick as the biggest Sac sleeper. You can view one on the small dollar site. Take care over there.

How about the women in the military coin set? Or, perhaps a token of why YOU are there, ie how about the World Trade center recovery coins? They have several years available in the silver/gold eagles. I know, some people call them death coins. But, these survived one of America's worst tragedies and you can carry this wherever you go. They have some with the American flag on the holder. I have the 2001, the year I retired from the military, on 1 Sep 2001 as a matter of fact. I volunteered to go back, but, they said no. Keep low and thanks for serving! Rayimage

I vote for a coin dated 1812 (not a lot of choices because of the war), because that was the time when the White House was burned. The coin can serve as a reminder that can and worse happen again, if there were no one willing to serve.

1945 ARAMCO gold coin. Weighs 31.95 grams of .917 fine gold.

The design is similar to those used on U.S. Mint and Assay Office ingots of the era. The seal of the Philadelphia Mint dominates the obverse, and the reverse displays the weight and fineness.

The Krause coin catalog notes that this type was "struck at the Philadelphia Mint for a concession payment for oil to the Saudi Government.” and “most were melted in bullion”
