IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys coach Bill Parcells announced his resignation on Monday.

According to a team news release, Parcells is leaving the National Football League altogether.

Take Survey: Glad Bill Parcells Is Gone?
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He leaves the Cowboys after four seasons and ends a stellar career that featured three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.

"I am in good health and feel lucky to have been able to coach in the NFL for an extended period of time. I leave the game and the NFL with nothing but good feelings and gratitude to all the players, coaches and other people that have assisted me in that regard," Parcells said via the release.

"I am retiring from coaching football. I want to thank Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones for their tremendous support over the last four years. Also, the players, my coaching staff and others in the support group who have done so much to help. Dallas is a great city and the Cowboys are an integral part of it. I am hopeful that they are able to go forward from here," he added.

The announcement comes 15 days after the Cowboys' season ended with a heartbreaking playoff loss in Seattle -- and it comes as something of a surprise.

Parcells had been at his office nearly every day since the playoff loss. There also were other indications that the 65-year-old coach was returning for a fifth year in Dallas and 20th as an NFL head coach.

That wouldn't surprise me one bit. I hope it doesn't happen because that would help the Cowboys.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • Jones will probably be on the phone to Pete Carroll sometime today. He will have to pull out all the stops
even if they might seem like long shots.
  • Bring Campo Back ! ! ! lol

Good luck taking over for Parcells, Jerry Jones wants a winner as bad as Steinbrenner, anything less is failure.
  • Bob Stoops and Jeff Fisher are a couple of names in the rumor mill along with Charlie Weiss.

The Big Tuna did his best. He does not have it in him to ressurect another football franchise. May he rest in "coaches peace." He has a great legacy.

I haven't been here for a while. WTF is Axtell? Dagger in his heart, I hope.

Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

I don't think he will, he says he likes it there and has no interest in leaving. I suppose he might leave if Jones offered an amount of
money that would be insane to turn down. I think Jones would have a better chance getting Stoops however.
  • I think a guy like Urban Meyer will become a candidate.
