<< <i>Well, after several days of tapping the submission number link like a rat in a Skinner box, I've got my grades!
lol, I hadn't thought of it quite like that, but tell me, how long were you tapping away? I feel the same way right about now. >>
Hmmm... six working days since it showed as received at the PCGS website. That's really fast considering the quoted 30+ day turnaround for economy, but with the lightspeed service some guys were getting I was operating on a variable ratio schedule of reinforcement.
Thanks to Eric, I bought 3 sets of platinum plus some 1 oz platinum coins. The sets have just been graded, and I got all 69s & three 70s: 1 oz, 1/2 oz , & 1/4 oz.
My credit cards are also paid, and I now have lots of airline miles.
coinboy.. youve been here a whole 3 weeks and already calling other people a dope i see.. wouldnt your time be better spent busily researching how many new platinum coins have been graded in the last 10 minutes
"the popularity of these series will grow more than likely and once the real mintage numbers are published, the potential of these coins are unlimited or very good at least IMHO"
one would assume anyone who wouldve been interested in these three week old rarities would already know what the mintage was or would have already ordered a set from the mint for themselves.. or are you saying there will be a whole new tier of speculators out there that become interested in these coins just because they were unpopular to begain with and very few orders for them were placed?
I've haven't seen you guys contribute anything here but ample stupidity, but I am sure your working on improving.
Let us know when you both think up something smart, will ya?
It must really tough on you to have been on this board a combined 8 years and a zillion posts to just watch your stuff go up, what 2-3%? and then see some real smart guys sign up and make 100-150% in about 25 days?
You two planning on going postal anytime soon because you realized you have been collecting the wrong things, or do you guys just plan on being the Board weasels and live your remaining days complaining about life in general?
I see no optimism in your cold existence. I, for one will never post to you again so as to minimize your pap. You guys need to get some professional help and medicine.

Yes, I do believe that is what he's saying. And because the Mint had already tapped out a few pocketbooks, not nearly as many people bought them. Don't you wish you had?
But since you didn't, maybe you should get over your searing regret and petty jealousy, and try to congratulate your fellow collectors on the saavy (and timely) purchases that they made, even though you didn't have the moxie to take a bold position yourself - even though you had plenty of help and good information from guys like eric and coinboy.

How many American Silver Eagle collectors are out there? Probably a lot more than gold and plat eagle collectors combined, agree? So, according to your assumption, every collectors should have purchased this coin from the mint at the issue price, which was $19.95 and yet this same silver eagle is selling at around $50 to $60 right now at eBay. I don't think all these buyers are second tier speculators. They just simply overlooked or forgot, by the time they realized it was too late. Same thing with 2006-w gold eagles.

Good grief man, that means you placed an order yourself sometime after I did on Saturday Dec 16! I never imagined from your all-night rant that you were someone who obviously acted on and benefited from posts from those "fly by night platinum spam buddies!"
I think coinboy is just as much to blame for the shameful display on this thread, but sheesh! Why all all the anger and bitterness?
"With over 700 graded by PCGS and whatever amount at the other grading companies, it looks like about half the 1 oz'ers have been graded.
And the other half hasn't shipped yet."
sounds like good evidence they are mostly all in the hands of greedy newb speculators.. a bad sign
Classiccoin - Your point-counterpoint started with you suggesting that the coins went to "greedy newb speculators" and has now ended with you pointing out you sold your nice stash for (presumably) a handsome profit. So, what is the point?

Back to the gist of the thread- The $25 coins were plagued with tiny planchet marks - much more so than the $50 and $100 coins. This was the case on the very early coins released by the Mint as well as the latter coins. Surprisingly, one would imagine the $100 coin would be the hardest coin to achieve a 70 grade - with all of that surface area. But, not the case here. The $10 and $25 coins were struck on (less than perfect) planchets with small flecks much more so than the larger $50's and $100's from everything I have seen. Wondercoin

That sounds like it explains a lot of the dot-like flaws I saw in the fields of the lower denominations (including some of the 12 $50 pieces in my case).
What I found most disappointing about the $100 pieces was that practically all of them had flaws in the rev rim, on the inside, at about 11 to 12 o'clock. The $10 pieces were worse, and had rims that looked like they had been gnawed on, in addition to showing the "wire rim" effect that others have noted.
Classiccoin - Your point-counterpoint started with you suggesting that the coins went to "greedy newb speculators" and has now ended with you pointing out you sold your nice stash for (presumably) a handsome profit. So, what is the point?

I get that you are being a hypocrite. And I get that it's sour grapes for whatever reason. And I get that you can't stop wallowing in it.
Does 623 posts give you some special authority? If it does, why not use it for something that involves you? Why don't you go chart the oxidation rate of your large cents, or something?
If someone needs your input, I am sure they will ask for it. Or, would you rather that we spend our time hijacking one of your threads like you are trying to do here? I am done responding to you - you'll get no respect from me - your 623 posts mean nothing, and your behavior here clearly illustrates why.

The above trends are based on imperfect data in an inefficient market.
In almost every case, the lower trend number is NGC, and the higher number is PCGS. In the case of raw coins, the lower number is usually boxed, and the higher number is for coins broken out of sets with no packaging (go figure).
The trend is up.
Another interesting observation is that having an NGC MS-69 coin is like having the worst of all worlds. I actually find that humorous.

It is certain that the Proofs get 5 strikes. Assuming that the Mint used the same type-proof worthy planchets for the Uncs, the difference in physical minting would be less than (5) strikes on the press for the Uncs.
Do you have any theory why this occurred here with the Uncs and not with the Proofs?
From the 'Secrets of the Mint' show, we know that they really inspect the West Point stuff and that they can sometimes yank around 50% of the production because of flaws.
Perhaps these coins did not receive the same inspection scrutiny?
I appreciate the correction. Earlier in the month there was a neat relationship between planchet size and 70-score percentages, but apparently its now the quarters, not the tenths, that aren't making the grade.
$25 is still King in MS70! $50 is King in MS69! The grades on the MS70's are leveling out!
