13 years too late...

Well, with the advice of some on here after a late night craving for wax, I bought about 3,000 unopened packs from every major brand from around 1980 up to present day. I put them all in a box and whenever I feel the urge I pull one or two and crack em open. Well tonight I pulled a 1994 Topps Series 2 pack and this was what was inside...

If it makes you feel any better, those 11 cards are probably worth about 2 dollars now.

  • I figured that. But, as I just told my wife, I've never won anything in my life. Now that I've won something, I can't get it because I didn't really win. Does that make sense?

The funny thing is tha the redemption cards are tough to find - especially for player collector's like myself. I recently bought a black gold redemption card for Dan Marino - and paid around $15 for it....since it was the first that I've ever seen.

You have to send it in anyways. Some kind sole at Topps will look kindly upon your plight.
  • Sooo, you're saying if I send it in anyways I'll get something?
  • Why not send it in to PSA? It might be a 1/1. Anybody have one graded by any grading service?

  • Thanks Stone!!!! Ha ha ha!!! image

So, can I submit even if I'm not a member?
  • Why not try to sell on ebay? There should be interest in an unsent redemption card.......image

  • Okay, now I'm getting the urge to start to collect these things. You guys are provoking me and if you're not careful I might just start collecting these things.image
  • Do I have to be a member of PSA in order to submit an order to them and if not how do I go about it? I too think it would be funny to send this in after all these years and send a note with it saying, "You take your time, so I'll take mine!" and demand them to send the cards! Just kidding. It has an expiration date on the back. But, yeah, could someone answer the PSA question.

  • That's not bad at all. I'll look into it. Maybe I'm crazy, but it sounds like a fun thing to add to the things I'm collecting. Then I could surround myself with cards that say "Winner" on them. That would be encouraging to look at every day!

I would not send it to Topps. Your odds of getting anything are 50/50 at best. If they do send you some cards, how much might they be worth? Your redemption card is a lot scarcer (and probably more interesting) than any of the cards you would get. Look at the comments your card has had on these boards already.

I would just keep it or get it graded by PSA. How many of the redemption cards are there that are able to be collected? You will have a low population conversation piece, if nothing else.
    Registry sets:
    1954 Topps BB
    1955 Bowman BB
    1956 Topps Super BB
    1957 Topps BB
    1969 Topps BB
    1984 Donruss BB
    1961 Fleer W.S. Pennants
1960-62 Fleer Team Logo Decals Run
  • That sure is a cool card to pull, is there a number on it like the new ones? It would be nice to try for the redemtion without lossing the card.

I'm going to try and get all my redemtion cards signed by the guy that the auto's being redemed from??? Something like that.

    image
  • No number on it. Just says Winner C on the front. I'm keeping it for sure now. Not sure if I'll get it graded though. I mean, I will eventually some day. Well, I might. Sorry, just typing out loud. What do you all think? I mean, would it be one that PSA doesn't have registered yet. I mean, believe me, it would be cool to be the only one to have something like that even though I doubt I am. I've never had anything for any reason like that happen in my life.

What do you all think I should do? I trust you all. Is it worth getting graded?
  • If I pulled it... I would definatly keep it, and have it graded.

    That card is deadly image

    My impression?

Only as a conversation piece - otherwise no.

I've got a bunch of redeemed and pulled cards somewhere. I even came across a winner cello that I received and never opened!

Not sure where it is now - that stuff was hot, hot, hot - until people realized that there was enough of the stuff so that everyone in the free and no so free world could have their share!

The cards were really sharp for their time - we were just starting to get into the "shiny" era!

We went from basic cards of the 70s - to full bleed, UV coated, dufex, chrome, refractor, atomic refractor technology...

I was waiting for glow in the dark cards.

The motion cards didn't really excite me.

Is this stuff great or what?!

I pulled a Hank Aaron auto. redemption card from 2002 Topps Heritage last (2006) year. I sent it in to Topps pleading with them to give me anything . I just got a form letter saying tough luck basically.

My gripe about the whole redemption card thing........supposedly when these cards are inserted into packs they have a card on hand or at least in the works to be sent to the redemption card finder. Why is there such a short time frame (1 1/2 years or so) to redeem. Is this just another way for Topps to make money by not actually producing all the auto, etc. cards that they insert redemption cards for?

  • There was an excellent article in Beckett Baseball monthly for January on pgs. 22 and 23. I would suggest reading it. It had some good insight. I'd scan it for you, but I'm pretty sure that's against some type of copyright code. It talks all about redemptions and the disdain that collectors and hobby stores have for these cards.

Say Guru, do you happen to have any 1993 or 1994 Topps wax, rack, and/or jumbo packs? I need one of each kind of pack from each series (part of my unopened pack collection)?

1997 Score had an insert set that glowed in the dark too - it was called Glowing Franchise. The only easy way to tell it from the more common Franchise inserts was to turn out all the lights.

  • I just opened a box of 1996 Cricket and pulled an Auto redemption for a card # to 100 (1:2000 packs, 1:50 boxes).

I tried emailing the company and they have had a company change (moved to England) and they can't redeem the card.

So now i'm stuck with a redemption card - would have rathered the auto card but thems the breaks image
  • FYI,

Topps issued 7 different "Winner" redemption cards in 1994. You can get a Winner A, Winner B, Winner C or Winner D. In addition there are Winner AB, Winner CD and Winner ABCD cards. I've got the A and B and think it would be cool to have all 7 cards but it's certainly not much more than a conversation piece. If you ever get all the cards, have PSA add it to the set registry and then you could be the #1 collector and get a certificate from them every year. Is it better to be #1 in something nobody cares about than not be #1 in anything? Let me know if you want to sell. I'll open the bidding at $1.

In spring 1994 , I had just got laid-off and my wife was , well acting like a women. I knew that I didn't have any money to blow , so I went to the local store and bought a total of " 1 " pack of topps to get my early fix. So I open the pack and right on the top was a " ABCD Winner " card. My first thought was maybe I was on candid camera or something. Then my thoughts turned to Charlie Bucket on "Willy Wonka ". I never did show it to my wife . I just sent it in and got the whole set. I still have it ,unwrapped in its original package that topps sent it to me in. I know their not worth much , but it always reminds me of that brutal lay-off.

  • I'll keep mine for now but let me know if you pick up the others, especially the AB, CD or ABCD cards. I checked the Pop report and somebody already has the Winner A and Winner B in PSA 8 so you've got some competition if you want to get this set into the registry. The Winner A is available on ebay for under $2 (ungraded). These unfound winner cards always get me to thinking about the Upper Deck Heroes cards. I wonder how many unfound Ted Williams autograph cards are sitting in somebody's basement collecting dust inside the unopened boxes.

  • Yeah dont send it in topps wont get it. they change the po boxes all the time when redemptions are done. Trust me I tried it a couple times just to see what would happen once with topps and once with ud both times came back stamped undeliverable or box closed
  • Thanks for the heads up. I just bought two on Ebay. I'll let you know how the process goes as time goes by. If I find any extra of the ones that I get that you don't have, I'll send them your way.
