Coin Show Report - Clifton, NJ
I've been going to this small, third-Sunday-of-the-month (except July and August), 30+ dealer show for about 13 years. Up until the past year or so, it was a sleepy show, with an OK selection of inexpensive US and more expensive World coins. Starting last year or so, this show has gotten a real energy boost: there are more dealers, they have nicer inventories and there are a lot more collectors and dealers walking the floor.
This show has always attracted the local wholesalers - they were easy to spot, walking the floor with their briefcases. Now, however, they're a lot harder to spot - the show is that much more crowded!
There are two or three new World coin dealers, each with extensive, very nice inventories. There are two or three new US dealers, too. Up until a couple of years ago, most of the Clifton dealers didn't go to the big monthly shows at Parsippany; now, I'd say that about half do. Several of the dealers also go to White Plains (which is why there were a couple of empty tables at Clifton today).
At this show, I usually look for interesting items that the wholesale dealers are looking to move, or coins for my inexpensive sets. Today, for example, my only purchase was a 1925 Peace dollar in a PCGS MS-63 slab. ("Why?", you ask? Because the PCGS slab in question was a PCGS 2 - used, according to Conder101, only in October and November of 1989 - and I didn't pay a premium for the slab.)
Sometimes I overhear interesting dealer-to-dealer gossip. Today, for example, I overheard one dealer telling another that "Nationals [bank notes] used to be hot, but now they're dead, except for top quality items.")
So, if you live within say, 45 minutes of Clifton, come on down to the show! Help make it a busier one by adding to the crowd and maybe spending some money!
