How do you dilute a dipping solution?

What do you dilute it with, and what's a nice balance to make it less harsh but still effective?
(Let's save the "I don't believe in dipping" comments for another thread.)

Since the sulfuric acid in the dip is an aqueous acid, just use water (I use distilled when it's on hand, tap water otherwise). I'm no habitual dipper, but I have successfully used roughly 50/50 and 25/75 dip/water mixtures. By diluting the dip, the process might take ten seconds or more, making it much more easy to control. Keep an eye on it, of course, and be prepared to experiment. Try it undiluted and diluted on some common-date circulated stuff first.

Oh, and your mileage may vary! Good luck.

Always pour dip into water, not water into dip to dilute.
