Six 1913 Liberty nickels?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,801 ✭✭✭✭✭
A tangent from another thread...

This page from the 1942 Blue Book...

image

...indicates that there are six 1913 Liberty nickels.

Why was this considered so, and when did it become common knowledge that there were only five extant?

Interesting - never noticed that before.

And since the Bluebook pricing has always been soooooo accurate, I'm sure they must have had a well-researched reason for that number.

This appears other places too. I think it had something to do with the original holder for the coins having 6 openings (I believe this holder is in the Newman museum so RYK has no excuse here image ), so in the 1930s and 1940s you will see the number reported as 6 in various places. I think the discrepancy got cleared up when the set was broken up which happened in the 1940s if memory serves. This is likely explained in the last Stack's catalog, if not there, then maybe in one of the other auction catalogs with a 1913 in it.

It was her son that owned the five 1913 Lib nickels.

THE ORIGINAL 5 1913 LIBERTY NICKELS WERE IN A HOLDER THAT ALSO CONTAINED A 1913 TYPE TWO BUFFAL0 NICKEL STRUCK IN COPPER FROM THE REGULAR DIES I THINK. THUS THERE WERE TRULY 6 1913 NICKELS IN THAT HOLDER BUT ONLY 5 OF THEM WERE OF THE LIBERTY HEAD TYPE. I DO BELIEVE THIS IS WHERE THE MIXUP ORIGINATED. I REMEMBER READING ABOUT THIS MANY YEARS AGO. HOPE THIS HELPS. BUFFNIXX

Another story is that the original owner of the 5 nickels said there were 6 to get people looking for the last one and subsequently (upon massive failure) demanding the ones he had. Just clever promotion.
