#LetsGoSwitzerlandThe Man Who Does Not Read Has No Advantage Over the Man Who Cannot Read. The biggest obstacle to progress is a habit of “buying what we want and begging for what we need.”You get the Freedom you fight for and get the Oppression you deserve.

This was 1975 - that's practically the dark ages! edit: check that - the 1975 reference was not for the check!
Now one could make it out to cash - but I would guess that some places wouldn't take a check made out to cash?
Another possibility may be his method of accounting - he may have taken the money from a biz account and transferred it to a personal account or the other way around?

It was an honest question deserving the honest answer it received. My son will someday ask the same question. Not many use that option for getting cash anymore.

Seems like this was the case. The writing on the back says "To be deposited [sic] my account" and is stamped by both the bank it was drawn on (Chemical) and Chase Manhattan (likely the bank he was depositing it into).
How anyone but Ralph got ahold of this check is a mystery though.
Also it appears that the date of the check is actually 1986, not 1996 as the seller describes, which would support the theory that it was before mass use of ATM's. ATM's were pretty widespread by 1996...but even so, some people still prefer checks.

<< <i>Why didn't he just go through the ATM? >>
Depends on how long it was ago or the amount needed. There is a dollar amount limit you can punch out from an ATM per day.
Pimp On....
