Question about the 71 Topps Thurman Munson?

I am thinking of eventually getting into buying some of the heroes of my youth and I saw today that
someone paid 750 US for a PSA 8 Topps # 5 of Thurman Munson??? My question to you the more
knowledgable baseball card collectors, is that not far far to high for this card or is that a normative price???

I have been keeping track of some of the football and baseball cards I want to go after eventually and this
is the first time I kind of thought the price was way to high??? Am I wrong.....what does this card in PSA 8
usually go for?

Thanks for any insight...

That card is a tuffie in 8. black borders, centering issues etc.

    edited to add:

someone bought it for 575.00 using the best offer feature.Linky

also the left to right centering is better then the pic I believe.

Very tough card to find unchipped and centered. Most PSA 8's are OC a bit, well centered high end examples are few and far between and people will pay quite a bit for them.
  • So am I to assume because of the relative scarcity of this card, I can expect to pay at least over 500 us???

Have any of you guys seen a PSA 8 go for lower?

    Thanks again...

If you will go down to a PSA7, you will pay about $500 less. Look for a high end 7.

    PSA 8s

    11/29/06 $515.08
    11/28/06 $577.00
    11/20/06 $574.00
    11/9/06 $549.00
    10/30/06 $282.00

    PSA 7s

    12/11/06 $78.00
    12/3/06 $78.00
    12/2/06 $83.00
    11/11/06 $84.00
    11/8/06 $91.00
    10/27/06 $78.00

Good advice from Alfonz. Also, if you consider buying raw, be careful. Lots of recolored 1971's out there. Good luck.

    Tough card indeed.

SMR is way off, especially for a nicer PSA 8.

Alfonz listed some recent sales that show the average. The sale on 10/28 was an error and the card was relisted. Going back a bit further youll find 2 that sold for even more.

9/25----$1,025.99......This card was the finest 8 you will ever see. I wish I saved a scan of it to show here.

10/19---$ 637...Also very nice, but still a tad OC

For about $ 7, 000 more you could have had this beauty last month

    PSA 9

Keep your eyes open and youll eventually find a 7 that will suit you nicely.

I actually just sold a fellow board member a PSA 5 of mine that could easily have been an 8 were it not for the almost undetectable 1/2 inch surface wrinkle. It was far nicer than either of the PSA 7's I own.

  • Thanks for the insight guys...I am still shocked that a 2nd year card can go for so much??

And I simply cannot believe someone would pay 7K for a PSA 9 of this card?? That really is outlandish!
And honestly, I can't imagine on an investment level, that was a smart buy either.....

I will certainly be keeping my eyes on a high end PSA 7 but still would prefer a PSA 8....

Possibly, however, the pop of that card is low. They just do not come up that often if ever.

    Good for you.
  • my scanner is awful, but here is another nice 5 of this card -

Those are some of the nicest looking PSA 5's I have ever seen on post 1970 cards.
You would almost have to think that if the card didn't have black borders it would easily grade out differently.

This might be a little out of place, but you always hear about the "tough 1971 black borders"-I agree they show corner wear easy but ALL cards are border sensitive-The grey borders on the 70 set are tough too....along with the burlap of the 68 set, the woodgrain of the 62,even the white borders of the 72 set......I guess the 71 gets all the attention because anyone at a glance can spot wear, but a focused look on the other 60's and 70's topps issues show the same issues-they are all cards printed on a cardboard stock.
