Hey Capped Bust Half guys - is this a grease fill on the reverse?

Any CBH guys wanna chime in? My first one of these, and I don't know squat about them.

EDIT: There were pics of my latest Saint here, but only a few posters gave a sh*t, so I poofed it.

I do not think they had grease filled dies back then, weak spots like that usually result from uneven metal flow especially when they are opposite higher relief detail from the other side. The P & L in the motto are routinely weak on many varieties because it is opposite Liberty's bust.

Doubtfull that it's a grease fill. CBH's are notorious for having weak strikes in the area around STATES and PLURIBUS. Yours isn't that bad actually.

    Thanks for the help

Your coin has metal flow issues, typical for the type. There are grease fill issues with CBHs, though. If someone searched Teletrade, about 4-6 years ago, there was an 1823 NGC45 that was missing most of stars 8-10 and a big chunk of the field from the surrounding area from a grease strike thru.

Your coin looks like an O-103, with possibly a slight die rotation. (The O-103 sample in Overton does not
show the same weakness's as yours?) You will notice that the top of the C (in 50 C) was also weakly struck.
This is probably because of the same metal flow issue discussed above, except that the metal meant for
the "50 C" flowed into the top portion of the Cap on the obverse. I would grade it mid/hi VF, from the image.
    Golf time!!

Worth $80, yes? As I said, I've never bought these before and I'm trying to get an idea for the price range.
The "0" in "50 C" looks like it has a little cud of metal in the bottom or something - is that related to the Overton#?

I would feel more comfortable at the $60 mark for this one Newb

Overton mentions that the 0 in 50C was recut. I'd say $80 is reasonable in today's market. I don't see any
real distracting marks, and in hand it probably has a little more "life" to it than the picture shows. One nice
thing about these old Busties is that there probably won't be a whole lot of new ones coming to market any time
soon. (It will be a $100 coin with a little time!) image

Thanks again everyone - one more question.

When you guys were first starting out, how in the he** did you keep up with what's a good price? Unless you're an expert, and I know many here are, there's no way you can keep up with all the varieties, not to mention simple date/mm values.

I don't want to walk around with a pop report in one hand and a redbook in the other.

    Or do I? image
