  • What's the grade?
  • NGC only has Brilliant Uncirculated listed on the slab.

I assume it's one of these that's being described:
    image
It's not strictly Roman, it's Romanian. Specifically, a gold stater of King Koson of Thrace; it's modelled on a silver denarius of Brutus the Tyrannicide. Listed in the Sear Greek catalogue as number 1733.

This one on CoinArchives was sold for $650 against a $750 estimate. Hoards of them have apparently been found in Romania.

Now, to the slab. I'm pretty sure no-one would ever actually grade an ancient coin as "brilliant uncirculated" - there's really no such thing, since all ancient coins with us today have been buried in the ground for a couple thousand years, dug up, and washed. And please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think NGC has ever slabbed ancients anyway.

    I'm suspicious. image

This is why I do not have a clue of its value do to such a high grade of (Brilliant Uncirculated)

    Any help would be great!
    Thanks Todd

NGC has slabbed ancients recently using non numerical grades. If the coin you are referring to is the above coin, a high end example goes for between $800 and $1000. A hoard of these was discovered and high grades pieces are very available on the market. The association with Brutus was dubious at best and more of a marketing story than scholarly work, but I'm not sure.

    Josh-

Do you take payment in the form of a manservant for x amount of days until said owl is paid for?

Just curious...I have some vacation time coming.

I certainly hope NGC did not misspell "stater" as "slater".

I was thinking the same thing, LordM.

I did some checking "across the street" (am I using the right terminology, here? image). I have discovered a few things:

    1. NGC do indeed occasionally grade ancients - normally only the common ones, and normally only when supplied together with a large consignment of "normal coins".

    2. They do indeed grade ancient coins as "Brilliant Uncirculated", quite liberally, despite the paradox involved.

    3. They are very secretive about their grading of ancients. No advertising or links that I could see. Hush-hush. Don't mention the war. image

All of which leads me to conclude that they don't really know what they're doing with regard to ancients. Their labelling this coin as "Roman" only confirms this in my mind. I certainly wouldn't pay extra for it.

So I'm not suspicious anymore. Just mildly annoyed. image

BTW, does NGC even have certificate verification on their site like PCGS does? I spent some time looking and couldn't find it...
