What's your experience buying off Beckett?

Well, I decided to make a final push and buy all the Marino cards I need to finish my basic set. It's nearly impossible to find common base cards on E-bay anymore because of the ridiculous fees, so I decided to check out Beckett which I only bought from once before. To start with, all dealers want at least $1 to $2 per common Marino, which is a slightly high compared to shows or buying lots on E-Bay. I figured that I'd suck it up and pay the money to get the cards I wanted. I proceeded to buy almost 50 cards and spent around $110 dlvd (from 9 different dealers - so the s&h was high).

So far, I've received 30 of the 50 cards and only 2 are even remotely gradeable. Only 4 of the 30 cards came in individual sleeves - most were shoved into team bags or hard plastic cases. One dipsh*t shoved 8 cards unprotected into a thick toploader. Unreal!! After all my efforts, I have 2 cards that I needed....so essentially, I've spent around $25 dollars a card for 2 common Marino cards. Great deal if you ask me!! I'm not too optimistic for the remaining 20 cards that are coming.

Regards,

I have bought a good bit from the site, but the multiple
S&H nonsense makes me depressed. (This is what the
survey says folks hate about EBAY EXPRESS).

It might have been in 2004 (late), a dealer with the
words "American All Stars" in his name sold me some
of the FEW decent raw cards I have ever gotten online.
(All graded 8/9/10). But, I cannot recall his exact
name. He was in Southern California.

Some Beckett sellers will respond to emails and discuss
the condition of their cards; some will not.

There is just a wrong feeling about buying a 25-cent card
    and paying $3.00 for freight.

Greg, I've done the same thing and ordered from Beckett several times (including some Marinos). It's totally hit and miss. I've been able to get a few 9s and 10s. I would say on average, I grade only about 5-10% of the cards that I buy (due to less than desired condition).

I'm sure there may be some ethical dealers there, but there's not many. I'm down to one or two dealers that I would ever buy from again. I have never received a mint card , much less a gem mint. Over 85% of the cards have been OC, scratched , creases rubbed out , etc . Not one card that I have bought have I ever considered getting graded. I realized that all I was to almost every dealer that I had dealt with there was a garbage dump. NON would allow me to return any card. Sadly SPORTSLOTS.com is probably worse. If anyone PM's me I could give them a list of who are the worst and who has done a little better, Sonny

  • I have a marketplace store, and i would say it is hit and miss just like anywhere else... You are going to have some dealers that will take care of you, and you are going to have some that drop the ball. But don't let a few rotten apples spoil the whole bunch, there are a lot of good professional sellers on the marketplace!

I use Beckett fairly regularly (every few months) and am very happy. Then again, I don't grade my Will Clarks, so I'm not too worried about a card being slightly off-center or having a soft corner.

(I actually placed two Beckett orders in the last week for almost 150 cards...so I'm *really* looking forward to opening the mail box every day after work!)
