Ever Have A Moment Like This???

A couple years ago, when I was about 12 I think, I went to a card show to pick up some new additions and maybe make a trade or two. This other kid was looking at my cards and really really wanted my Rafael Furcal game used bat card from 2001 Pacific Private Stock. He didn't have anything to offer except for an Albert Pujols rookie game used card. I didn't know who he was so I rejected the trade.

Ever have a moment like this? I think about it every day

Anyone who has been collecting for 20 yrs. has a bunch of stories like that - of course.

In the thread about industry "finds" - the one where the BBCKid got a bunch of 52T packs - they looked perfect!

    image

He was offering them in SCD for about 1700$ - at the time it just didn't fit into my budget - well...I shoulda made it fit!!!!!!!!!!!!

I havent had any moments as you have described save for the ocassional "self inflicted" injury to one of my Emmitt cards. I stabbed one recently with a steak knife while trying to cut the tape on a top-loader image

Coin board, currency board, even the stamp board...... get quite
    a few young collectors.

It is kind of ironic that the cards - historically for "kids" - struggle to get young
    folks on board.

The chances of me being on this board now would be near zero, if I had
not played with cards 50-years ago.

Mr. Orlando's pep-talk (February 2007, SMR) notwithstanding, the broad
future of this endeavor looks more uncertain to me each day. Absent
many more young additions, I dunno where all this will be in 2027.

Continuing the thread about card mutilation, I dropped a box of cards a few years ago and one card flew out and shot out of the soft sleeve and top loader and smashed the top right corner. Of course it was my Tony Dorsett 1997 Legends card (worth around $400) that was the best pull of my life. I could have cried...

After that incident, I was so p*ssed I bought 5,000 card saver II's and switched all my cards out from top loaders and proceeded to throw out every top loader in my house. To this day, there mere sight of a top loader infuriates me.... image

    Card Savers.

First of all, welcome Kyle! I don't know if I said that to you yet and you have been busy in your first month.

I'm happy that there are young guys and old guys and guys in the middle like me. So, don't be taken back by the reaction to your age, we've all been there too and obviously have had collecting in our blood for many years after. Hopefully you'll be collecting still into your 30's, 40's and 50's.

That being said, as Stone pointed out, many of us had many similar encounters. One I can remember was in 1987. I refused to trade my 3 Mattingly rookies for one Rose rookie. My Matties, thinking back would only have been in the 7-8 grade range as I was a mere 8 when I got them out of packs. This Rose, if memory serves was in the 6-7 range. I remember tracking both cards in Beckett for years and kicking myself I didn't leap at that trade.

BTW, I also have some shares of Enron and WorldCom if anyone is interested.

Well, that explains why I haven't had any luck. All this time I was dialing 1-800-NOP-OOPY. Didn't work so well.

I'm impressed that you're going after GU at the age of 16! Highly commendable.

Are you doing this alone or getting help?

I agree with Zef - it's great to have different POV's on this board - I look forward to your future purchases.

I have wondered where the hobby would be today had Topps just stayed the course and produced cards with gum and not changed back in 92. Part of the allure of collecting cards was seeing the new version every year. From 1992 to 07 I think Topps has used maybe 4 styles. packs should be 75 cents today with a slab of gum. On stock that was always used (prior to 92)

Once Upperdeck came out many kids wanted only 'shiny' stuff.

    Steve

    Good for you.

By myself. It did take me a few months to learn everything about collecting game used memorabilia like who to buy from, how to tell if a jersey is real,etc.etc. and I sticked with it though and it's a lot of fun and I have learned a lot.
