I was rather surprised by what seemed to be somewhat mixed results in the sale. I also wonder if these coins looked different when viewed personally rather than through web photo repro.
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.
At first glance I was surprised that the 1933 only went for £18,000. I have a catalog from the late sixties that tout the piece being worth £30,000!!!
It turns out that the Alderly piece is a pattern bearing a "military" obverse portrait. There appears to be some 1933s out there that resemble the business strikes of 1932 and 1934, probably worth much more.

Yes, all 1933's are extremely RARE, however the regular strikes as opposed to the pattern issue are more highly desired and command a much larger premium....... Difficult to prove of course, as they so seldom appear for sale......
I thought I remembered a regular issue specimen trading hands in a private transaction last year for in excess of £40,000. I can't confirm this, but I seem to recall the event..... maybe someone else can confirm this...... It was a much NICER coin too.....

I believe that it was dealer Mark Rasmussen who last year had three rare pennies for sale -- all featured in one of his catalogues -- the Ex Norweb 1933, an 1937 Edward VIII, and the unique 1952.

I believe that you are correct, at least in regard to the 1933.... I'm not home now, but when I return, I will check the catalog and comfirm his offerings.....
