Added yet another HTF FB Roosie to my clad set!

65-Date clads

This 71-P was in a 66 holder, cracked out, re-submitted and obtained the FB designation. It is a (1/6) and I feel they are very H.T.F. <----- (Jon, this means Hard to find! image ) and will soon be going in again for a re-grade.

Later, Paul.

  • Congrats on the designation. I sent in 7 1971 dimes that should have been ms66 and ms67 and got ms64 and ms65 too. I sent them to Clackamas (he's working on a 71 mint set now) and he agreed with my assessment. I'm not going to submit anymore dimes for a long long time (actually, probably no more of my coins are going to go to pcgs).

Thanks Paul, I got the HTF thing.

    Good luck on your regrade.

I'm thinking of resubmitting a few of my dimes that came back in body bags to see if that works.

Let me see if I understand what happened here.
You cracked a MS66 out, sent it in and it came back a MS64FB.
But you disagree with the grade, so its going back to retake one or two of the grades it lost getting the FB.
Well then I don't blame you, dropping two grades is not the norm under a crackout from the same service.
Good luck and keep us informed what happens. image

Even without seeing it, my guess si the coin will probably end up correctly graded in a 65FB holder. The first time through the graders probably felt it was a 65 just on the cusp of FB, so they gave it the extra point rather than the designation. Second time through it got the designation but lost one point on the technical grade. Three submissions sounds about right for getting your coin right, so expect a 65FB the next time around. image

I promise not to laugh if it comes back MS65...no bands

Because that's my luck, and no one wants my luck.

I think he is sending it back as an upgrade. When you leave it in the holder they won't lower the grade, but will upgrade it or they may send it back as it was.

  • Many people have said something along the lines of the following...

If you submit the coin 5 times, and get say ms65, ms65, ms65, ms65, ms66, then coin really is an ms65 and the ms66 was lucky.

BUT that is not a correct assessment, as on these low pop modern coins we may know the coin in question is nicer than say all 8 other ms66's out there. Shouldn't ms66 be the real grade?!

For example, I know my 80-d Lincoln is THE finest known one, nearly an ms68, better than all the other ms67's I've got graded or have seen by far, yet pcgs has graded it ms66 two times now. This is just so unfair. I'm sick of dealing with them, and am not going to let them ruin the fun coin collecting should be.

You don't see any, because I don't have any.

Dan60, I bought the coin. The seller told me the coin was in a 6 holder and he cracked it for a re-grade and got the 4FB. I'm thinking if they graded it a 6 the first time and now has the FB, then I will resubmit the coin in hopes of getting at least a 5.

    Later, Paul.

  • I have a 71P in PCGS 65FB that I've tried to get into a 66FB holder 3 times now. It's going in 3 more times before I give up on it.

Ah my favorite hunt is being discussed here. Roosie dimes from the 70's, tough coins to make in high grades or full bands. And to back up this statement, the only two years to yet have a FB coin graded is 74 and 78. Plus we all know how hard the 1970 is to find in anything above 66. They get a bit easier from 75 on, but not on the FB side.

Don't bother right now. PCGS changed something with Clad Rossies recently, cracked out 67's are getting 65'd or worse. Its a waste of time and money at this juncture. I think the graders looked at too many SF coins in the last two years.

It's the modern graders. I found that if I submit under the modern tier I get hammered. If
I submit under the economy tier I get better grades.

Could this be the reason that often the free submissions awarded for 90% completion of a set tend to fall, more so inline with our expectations, or are they graded through the same system of the moderns?
A good question for the QA forum, if it was still active. image

  • I stole a MS66FB 1971-D Roosie Pop 19/2 off eBay for $28.95. That is bargin basement pricing.

Would I get an even better grade if I used the more expensive Regular Tier?
  • Good find on the 71-d. Wow. Was that the BIN or an auction? It's probably a $150 coin.

I got a hard to find pcgs holder, an ms68 88-d pop 5/0. The coin's worst than my ms66's. The grades or registry rankings on Roosies is MEANINGLESS. People looking at my set would think the higher the grade the worst the coin is supposed to be. (Normally I wouldn't buy or I'd immediately return the overgraded coins, but they're so darn cheap for the pops, I think I should hold them for a bit).
  • It was a BUY IT NOW or Best Offer auction on eBay and at $28.95 for MS66FB from 1971, I did a BUY IT NOW

WOW how did I miss that one? I even have one at the graders now looking for at least a MS67 no bands. A real nice 71, just lite on the lower band. Great buy, I would have grabbed that in a heartbeat. image

    Dan,
I am willing to trade the 71-D MS66FB for dimes that will improve my 1976 Registry Mint Set. I currently have a '76-P MS67 and a '76-D MS66. If you have something that will improve my set, I will trade coin for coin or trade coin plus cash. Let me know
