Thinking of starting a Peace $ set...any advice?

StoogeStooge Posts: 4,668 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was wondering as to what would be a nice grade for the buck thats not going to break me.

TT a while ago sold a complete set (Coin by coin) of MS64's in old green holders. This would be an interesting endeavor. There would be a couple high dollar ones in there, so I'm not sure.

I'm open to suggestions...

    Paul,

I personally think 64 is a very nice looking coin and that is right before the big jump for a lot of the coins.

I had some, but sold them to buy you know what.imageimage

    Hi Paul,

    My favorite series.........image

Peace $'s in MS64 are very affordable with the 34-s being the most expensive (in MS64) at around 5k and all others less than $1500....it's a personal choice as far as grades go but whatever you decide purchase these without problems such as carbon, water spots, haze, etc. and try to locate pieces that have there original frost and luster. I prefer the common dates in MS65 along with the 22-d (65), 23d (65) 26, 26d and 26s (65) as for the money they provide the best value imo and the tougher dates (before the big jump) in MS64......and a nice set should run you under $15k.

Be very picky and don't pass on coins that have superb luster, eye appeal and no problems.....believe it or not it should take you a year or longer to complete a set of problem free, PQ for the grade pieces imo......so be patient. image and have fun !!

    Good luck !!
    Steve

Thanks for the great info Steve.

I'm just mulling it over for now. Thought about the halves also.

    I agree with Steve.
A mix of MS64/MS65 could be a nice looking set, and affordable, if you are a bit choosy (which, I bet you are image ).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

A set of 64s with booming luster would be a great looking, challenging, and not to expensive set when its all said and done.

Don't focus on grades - focus on coins with similar looks (lustrous white for example) that MATCH. Just find PQ looking coins for the grade. SOme of the coins are quite affordable in MS65 grades and some are pricey in MS64 and you might have to buy lower grades. Forget plastic and buy appealing coins. If you're picky, you may find its harder to build a nice matched looking set than you might think. That's what I would do if I were working on a set....

I'd have to agree with that. I can't find a grade I seem to like for peace dollars. There seems to be quite an appearance difference among coins of the same grade. Even AU58's....Sometimes cleaned Peace dollars look better to me. image

May take a year or two,but it will happen.
Don't expect them all to be blast white, unless they have been dipped.
    Good luck,

<< <i>So did you build the set? I see the original post is almost 3 years old. >>

    No!

I have become a switch hitter so to speak, as I have started to collect topps only baseball cards. Much more fun for me, as I only have to deal with 1 grade...PSA 10!

I started collecting satin finsih MS69 holdered coins for $30 delivered to my house. I have 24 of them. I just laugh when I think of the thousands of dollars that collectors doled out for the '05's when the first came out. I need the Minn-D and WV-D, and I will have the entire 2005 set of statehood quarters for just $30 and under each.

  • 63-65 (depending on dates) or all 64's looks like best bang for the buck.

Start with the tough one 1964 image

MS64 graded would make a nice set.

  • 1964 Peace dollars seem to be unique in that the U.S. Mint seems to have successfully eliminated all of them, as opposed to having half a dozen selling for a million or more a piece or sitting confiscated in a vault after the Secret Service showed up when someone tried to sell one. We never hear about alleged sightings, either--no grainy black-and-white photos or descriptions of short, gray aliens with oversized black eyes trying to fit one in a vending machine.

MS64 Peace dollars would seem a great balance between price and eye appeal, as common dates can be had for about $50. I just don't see nearly as many of them as I do Morgans when I go to coin shows or local dealers. If your experiences are similar, expect to use the Internet a lot even for the common dates, unless you feel lucky and brave about raw coins.

  • Nice looking toned Peace dollars are challenging to find above MS64.

    Best of luck.

  • Wow! Non-faked toned Peace dollars are a lot harder to find than their Morgan counterparts! That is really nice! (The first one, that is. I can't see anything but a little red square on the second one.)
