Local dealer.. Do you track Morgan VAMs?

I visited a local dealer over the weekend for the first time. He was on the phone when I first walked in. As I was browsing his counter, I over heard him tell the person on the other end that he "Just had a couple of dead beats in the shop". Bad first impression...
But to the point. I had asked about his Morgan inventory. Said he had almost 400 in stock. Then I asked if he tracked them by VAM. He said "What's a VAM"? I turned around and walked out. Will be going back this weekend better educated to browse a little deeper this time.

I'm by no means a master collector. Mostly common, a few nice ones here and there, and never really pursued a series or type. BUT... have a couple of nice Morgans in a Dansco and have been intrigued by all the VAMs. Will go back to that dealer this weekend, a little wiser, a little better prepared ( for his attitude) and slowly and methodically go through his Morgans. Will post any finds. Starting with the Hot 50....

Sounds like a cherry orchard ready for picking.

    Gunny:

one of the local five dealers I buy from tracks VAMs. When PCGS starts putting out the monthly magazine with a price guide for a few hundred VAMs I think we will see many more retail dealers will care about VAMs.

This shop is in total disaray and poorly lit. Doubt seriously if he keeps up on current events. Proof will be in the pudding when I go back and see first hand what his grades and asking prices are. He did have a few PCGS slabbed Morgans on display that were priced acccordingly. Regardless..... Still hope to find this a VAM cherry pick

Rick; Do I understand you right? Is PCGS going to start putting values on some of the vams?

A lot more dealers are aware of and look for the better known and easily attributable VAMs than a decade or longer ago. For a long time, and for many still, the thinking was that they man hours to look at them and to know the VAMs was a lot higher than the potential rewards and that the high premium ones were so rare that they were unlikely to cross their cases. Many dealers are still happy to get a reliable profit on their silver dollars selling them at retail.
