I see the MDCCIII incorporated in the legend, but I don't understand how we are to know the order of the digits of the date. Can somebody explain this?

Probably doesn't matter so long as the total adds up.... CMDICII = MDCCIII (regardless,in practice, Roman numerals are listed in decending order of value.... so just take the symbols and arrange them that way........
C= 100 M=1000
M=1000 D= 500
D= 500 C= 100
I= 1 C= 100
C= 100 I= 1
I= 1 I= 1
I= 1 I= 1

Yes, but in some instances VIIII is acceptable as 9.....
I'm speechless ....................... what a beautiful coin
and with an Eliasberg and John Clapp pedigree to boot
I might add you picked it up at a very good price, basicly at what it sold for a the ANR Eliasberg auction 20 months ago
Do you know if it is still in the NGC slab or did the previous owner remove it? I'm not sure what your feelings are about slabs but IMHO with the Eliasberg pedigree I would hope it is in the slab.
Either way you have a real gem there so be proud and enjoy it ..... I'm envious

When I viewed the coin I do not recall it being in a slab. It was VERY nice in hand and I will probably get it slabbed.
I was surprised I bought it there and was prepared to bid higher.

<< <i>By the way it was actually lot 283 in the Eliasberg ANR sale of April 2005. They gave the wrong lot number in the Gund catalog. >>
I know I looked it up and noticed the error on Stack's description
Bidask be sure to ask NGC (or PCGS) to note the Eliasberg Pedigree on the slab. I'm sure NGC would probably do it since they graded the ANR Eliasberg Auction coins.
