Sending Coins to Littleton

VTCoinsVTCoins Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭
Littleton Coins has been sending out "Special Buy Lists" lately, and they list a bunch of coins that I would ordinarily sell for 90% silver.

Coins like:

1948 Roosies Good or better $55 roll
1949 Roosies Good or better $55 roll
Quite a few Washington Quarters in the 1940s for $110 roll
Common Walker Dates for $110 a roll
Early Franklins for $110 to $120 roll

Anyone had any success sending this sort of material to them?

I just don't want to spend hours on end pulling this stuff out of my silver, sending them a package and having them buy only 10% of the group.

Based upon my experiences, they would pick through and likely keep 20-50% of it. "Special Buy" is a marketing term and no indication that they will really need all of those dates or accept the quality of them upon receipt.

My personal experience is similar to VEEP: Littleton is VERY picky, takes the top 10-20% of what you have to sell and sends back the rest. Several years ago I sent them by mail a large amount of barber material that was already culled of problem coins (in my opinion) and they sent most back. I was not pleased with their tactics.

Others have had similar experiences. When they need specific coins they may buy a higher percentage.

Determine if the costs and time are worth it to you to send them coins.

I have decided never to sell to them again based on my own experience.

The trick is to just send them the best stuff in the first place. If there's
just a little to return they'll keep it all. Keep what you send in a narrow
    grade range that's problem free.

    Good luck.

I had almost all my stuff sent back, therefore, I wouldn't recommend them. Just from my experience about a year ago.

I'm convinced. From now on, all of my best stuff goes straight to Littleton.

I have an accumulation of "better" 90% silver that I am going to send them. If they buy 10%, then Iwill know not to send them any packages in the future.

    We'll see how they do.

There are so many warnings against dealing with them on the buy side, why deal with them on the sell side either? Why not just send your stuff to Shop at Home?

They are paying about 30% more then if I just scrap the coins to one of the big guys. For small quantities, it doesn't make a lot of sense. We have quite a bit right now, so that 30% adds up.

I considering selling to them a while ago, since it seemed as if their prices were very attractive...After I received comments, similar to the ones posted here, I decided not to send them anything.

I've never sold them any coins but have been told by people who have that they are picky and return a lot of the coins. You can probably avoid the problem by being picky about what you send them.

Littleton is the only dealer I know that has people sending THEM coins to cherrypick.

Littleton is in business to make money, just like all dealers are. They pay high and they sell high. The poor newbee's who pay them retail + should at least get quality merchandise, don't you think? Steveimage

I have a dealer friend who sends them stuff and gets paid formost or all of it. Personally, I wouldn't bother based on what I hear here.

I learned early on to send them only solid for the grade, problem free coins-- No rim dings, no spots, not cleaned, etc. Even after "learning what they want" they would return coins that I was just shocked to get back. All that I could figure was that they are running a business that probably includes some kind of min/max system and at the time my coins arrived, they were in no need for those particular date/grade combinations.
