Scratched or damaged cases from ebay sellers.

It seems that I have come across more cases that are either very scratched or have outright dings on the corners. Are these sellers juggling the case before shipment? They tend to come from either low feedback sellers or higher volume guys (2000+ feedback).

Has anyone else noticed this?

have you ever submitted any cards?

I can't tell you how many I received back last year that look like they had circulated as currency or something.

As long as the card is fine and the overall integrity of the holder is not comprimised and there' s not a large mark in the field of view of the card, not a big deal.
  • I was at a show this past Monday and was amazed to see how some people handle their stuff!!

I always put my graded cards into platics sleeves...either for shipping..or if they are part of my show material, just to protect them..and also so I can price them without having to put a sticker on the slab.

One guy had a "blowout" case of PSA cards....literally thrown into his table top case...sliding around...
When it was adding to the case, he'd reach under the table..grab a stack and literally TOSS them into the opened case. Then he'd reach in...slide them all around, in order to get the top of the case to close.

At the end of the show...he again..reached in...grabbed cards but the handful and just threw them into a big box under the table.

I agree...they did look like currency that's been out way too long.

I've got a couple like that. As goose said, it's sort of a matter of luck - not much you can do when it's not in your possession.

Once you do get a scuffed-up slab, you can either get a reholder, or, see what can be done with some Novus #1 & 2 polish - that stuff will do a good job of removing all but the deepest scratches.
  • I don't know why these folks simply don't invest in a few packs of graded card sleeves that cost $2 to $3 per 100. Definately a cheap way to preserve the holders and spare someone a more hefty $5 per reholder. Would be nice if more sellers used team bags for top loaders instead of sealine with tape. I've had more than one card stick to the tape and get damaged.

I get at least one in every return shipment. Usually only one scratch, and usually a fairly deep scratch, not just a light surface blemish. Maybe someone in the sealing process that's being lazy or just plain not careful.

As long as it isnt the card being injured its not that big of a deal to me.

The scratches I'm talking about are from handling. Like someone mentioned, the graded card bags are pretty cheap and go along way to protecting the cards.

I just about another card with a scratched case. I'm building a small collection of them to get reholdered. To me it is a big deal because the case is part of the display.

    You are not alone.

Within reason, a few scratches don't bother me.
But, many buyers complain to me about scratched
cases. They also complain about tiny price sticker
adhesive-remnants; even though it is easily removed,
they waste their time emailing about it.

I understand that PSA now has a new option:

Grading the case option: Submit your already graded PSA slab and PSA will encapsilate the encapsilation and attach a PINK label which will grade the condition of the case.

Note the PINK label is particularly for those whiners who complain about a few scratches on their case.

I once received a large lot of graded cards that had something red and sticky, like jelly, all over the cases. My wife came in, and I was cleaning them off over the sink. She just shook her head. The previous owner evidently really enjoyed his cards!

    nearmint,
Be careful of the seal. If there are small cracks in the seal, moisture will get in.

Thanks for the warning. I pretty much just dabbed at them with a damp dishcloth, and they cleaned up okay. I have thought about doing an immersion test, though, with junk cards that got holdered. Whose holder do you think is most watertight?
  • ndleondleo Posts: 4,150 ✭✭✭✭✭
Based on how hard it is to crack them, I would say Beckett. Their seal has much more integrity because it uses two large surfaces. I believe the PSA and SGC seal use sonic welding of the top and bottom, which could have microscopic cracks.

  • BGS case may be water tight but they are tough to look at...the plactic they use is so cheap, the true color of the card is distorted and when you look at the slabbed card, you dont see the card, you see the plastic first, then the card....

PSA has WAAAYYYY better quality plastic, you dont even notice it when looking at the card...hold the same card next to eachother, 1 a PSA and the othe BGS, the difference is amazing!

when people give the plus and minuses of the grading card companies, the only plus i hear from BGS is that the case is very sturdy...true but who goes around FLEXING and BENDING the case to see if it breaks? unless you keep your PSA cards near moving traffic, the "strength and rigidity" of the plastic has no bearing....

Based on the handling scratches I'm seeing on the PSA cards off ebay, some of the these slabs are getting handled like Tina Turner during the Ike years.

I think the distortion you are seeing is from the thickness of the plastic. There are only a few grades of optical plastic and I'm sure that PSA, Beckett, and all use the same standard grade. They probably buy them from the same supplier.

i disagree, dont think PSA and BGS get their slabs from same company...just too different to be the same...the BGS plastic does not seem clear, seems to have a shade of grey that prevents the light from passing through unhindered....

    fandango,
There are only 2 or 3 suppliers of optical plastic in the world, so please don't make assumptions you know nothing about. I work in the DVD business have seen all of the optical grades and suppliers out there.
