Focus issues...

Has anyone had a problem with focusing on collecting. I mean I've been all over the grid with baseball for the last year. I've found it really hard to focus on one goal in collecting that is obtainable. There are so many things that I want out there. So, tonight I decided to focus in on my birth year of Topps, 1979. I found a really helpful aid in collecting. Below is the link. It's from www.sportscardfun.com. Maybe it will help some out there. And if anyone has any old 1979 Topps they don't want anymore, just let me know! Thanks!

This gets talked about from time to time along with spending too much - being out of control - OCD - and other assorted topics.

I have gotten out of control a few times.

I tried to diagnose/dissect the behavior and come up with an answer/solution for why I did it.

Best I could come up with is substitution for things that weren't going well in my life.

Solution - KNOW one has a problem with focus, overbuying etc. - and come up with a solution.

    Keys:

    1. Establish a GOAL which is predicated on,

    2. Budget - how much can you really afford.

The Goal is based on a distillation of what you enjoy and coming up with a FEW areas to concentrate on and no more!

The Budget is easy - whatever your wife will give you! image

Seriously, if one has 200 bucks a month for cards, e.g. Then one can't be working on 10 sets. That simple.

So, you've done the hard part - gonna focus on one year - cool! Now, the budget and the rest is ez.

    What do ya think?

I'll tell you what I think-- that you are one lucky man indeed if your preferred indulgence for squandering money is something-- anything-- that has resale value. For me it's always been snacks at the gas station and $150 shots of scotch; all of which are harder to sell, once consumed, on the secondary market after you've come to your senses.

You can find a really nice complete set of 1979 Topps on Ebay for around $100-$125 or so. I totally understand what you mean about staying focused, but I'm pretty sure I'm zeroed in on my ultimate challenge; to complete a run of the very best 1976-79 Topps sets possible (starting in early March; I've got a couple other things I need to get in February first).

  • I've never had much focus over the last 15 years and as a result don't have much in the collection. A lot of buying, trading, selling... probably made a healthy profit over the years but just don't have much to show for the work. I finally found an attainable hobby goal of getting a complete run of near mint Topps Minnesota Twins sets. Appears I'm competing with a few others with the same idea and team. That would be a fun project for a Cleveland fan as well and if you wern't picky about condition could be done relatively cheap until you hit those early years. The 1979 Topps set can be found in solid near mint raw form for around $100 but most will contain an off-centered copy of the Ozzie Smith rookie card among numerous others in the set. The 1979 Topps was one of the worst in terms of quality control. Lots and lots of off-centered cards. If you just want a basic near mint set then I'd save the money and buy the whole thing at once. It will save plenty of time and money. If you want a high grade set then you'll probably have to buy several raw sets, sort out the nice ones, sell the dupe sets, then hunt for upgrades.

Actually, centering issues were true for pretty much all 1970s Topps sets. For example, you know that 1977 set with the clever billboard design on the back? Well, it sure doesn't look too good miscut or hairline bordered. image
