McGwire...Impact of HOF Voting on Cards

I've been watching Mark McGwire's 1985 Topps (regular and Tiffany) rookie card for the better part of eights years. I've seen the regular PSA 10 go from about $6,000.00 to now about $400.00. Of course, that occurred over time. But recently, there have been a couple of Tiffany PSA 10's on ebay...still a fairly rare card. Here are the links and final selling prices PRE HOF vote:

1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $1,815.99 on 12.3.06

1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $2,025.00 on 12.3.06

1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $1,935.00 on 12.12.06

1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $2,075.00 on 12.18.06

1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $1,600.00 on 12.20.06

1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $1,225.00 on 12.28.06

And the one that recently sold POST HOF vote:

1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $1,076.11 on 1.16.07

What a drop off. At first the card was selling from $1,600.00 to $2,075.00. Then as the talk started about McGwire's HOF voting, it dropped to $1,225.00 and now, post HOF vote, it's at $1,076.11. So in about one month, the card lost approximately 1/2 its value. Amazing. I'm guessing it will be a while before we see another Tiffany PSA 10 on ebay, but I'd be real curious to see if it would even break $1,000.00. I suppose now HAS TO BE the best time to find a regular PSA 10. I can't see that card going for more than $400.00. The last regular PSA 10 sold for $350.00.

1985 Topps Mark McGwire PSA 10 selling for $350.00 on 1.4.07

As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  • Barring any further PR disasters, I'm guessing it may fall a bit more but in Dec '07 and early Jan '08, when the HOF talk heats up again, it will jump back up to what it was this year. And then it depends on the voters. But then again, I also don't really know what I'm talking about.
  • As you can imagine, I too have been watching these cards closely. 3 of those tiffanys were sold by the same guy ( I have communicated with him in the past, a very nice guy and huge McGwire fan. He also owns the only BGS 9.5!!!) and they all got listed right after the previous one closed. One of those auctions was also relisted because of a NPB. I think you see the decline of the cards selling price was mostly because they were all listed so close to each other, and the supply was too much too quickly. Its a select market for that kind of money on a single card of a controversial player.

edited to add: He also has a PSA 10 Tiffany that he's keeping for himself! Thats a total of 4 of the 26 PSA 10's, plus the 1/1 BGS 9.5. AMAZING to say the least

This has been a disaster for McGwire fans.

He was a great player - he would've hit homers with or without meds.

His cards will remain in my collection whether they sell for nothing or a lot.

Eventually he will be in the HOF and kids down the road will want his card - just because he's a 500 HR hitter.

No one really knows what other players have been taking over the last 50 yrs?

This is not an apology - and not condoning anything - just tryin to see the glass half full.
