Well, no longer sick to my stomach! :) Updated

I am working on upgrading my All-Time Packer set and a PSA 7 Don Huston 1955 All American closed last night. I set me snipe at $468 and basically banked on winning the card. Well, my snipe software was on the fritz so I manually went in to win this lovely card. With 15 seconds to the damn thing sky rocketed to $522.

I was over my means at the $468 but I sold a whole bunch of cool Favre stuff to get the cash for this transaction. And I have not seen a 7 in about a year. An 8 sold for $1500 recently on ebay.

Now I sit back this morning with no buyers remorse 'cause I did not bid. I can't believe it went that high.

Still pissed off though. Those HOF Rookie collectors are making me pay a lot for this card.

-----------------------

Last night another PSA 7 closed and this time I won it for alomst half of the other price. $283.00! Damn excited. Then I saw Carew for me sold one for a buy it now just hours afterwards for $339.00. Where are these coming from? Mine is not the nicest 7 but the centering on the other three are about the same.

See the link of closed Don Hustson Auctions. Take a peek at the Wheaties card. Nice piece.

    Sorry to hear about this.

I agree with patience - you will be rewarded. If this was a registry motivated item - eventually your turn will come and hopefully for a better price.

Another thing would be to consider looking at shows - especially if ya can find a nice raw card to have graded..

    Good luck.

I don't know, we aren't talking high grade 70's stuff here. I have a hard time believing high grade 30's 40's 0r 50's HOF Rookies going down in value anytime soon. Espiecally PSA 7's, since it considered high grade, but yet affordable to more

I know it sucks donkey discs but you can't beat yourself up.

    Been there, done that.

Just put the Huston in your favorite search and when, not if, he's up for sale again, then you can take another shot.

    Good luck image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

    Wow, that's an impressive price.

I haven't followed the card closely, but had that one in my watch list to track for my all american set. Now I guess I know the $195 SMR value is a little off on this one, I'll make a note of it.

I'm sure another will come along for you, and you can bet I'll stick with the PSA 6's I've been buying if it's going to be that high, so no competition from me. image

Unfortunately, things like this are very common in vintage football. It may be true in modern as well, I don't know.

There could be multiple groups of set collectors going after this card -- '55 Topps AA set collectors, HOF collectors, and Packer collectors. They will all drive up the price...

I see similar issues all the time, even on common cards in the '40s and '50s. Many people collect Packer team sets, and it drives up the price of even commons, making it more costly to build complete sets from those years. The Packer cards all sell for a premium in at least 1948 through 1952. I don't collect cards from other years right now, so I can't comment on other sets, but I suspect overlapping complete sets, HOF sets, rookie sets, and team sets drive up the price in a lot of areas.

That's an unreal price for a 7. I once owned two PSA 8's of that Hutson card and sold them both for less on ebay. The first one sold for $450 about five years ago, then I sold the other one on ebay two years ago for slightly less! Although the centering on the $450 one was much nicer. They were both PSA 8 NQ's.

The Rookie Hall of Fame collectors are setting the bar much higher these days. I don't see prices declining much for any pre 1969 Rookie
HOF cards in the near future.

Sorry you missed out on that card FavreFan.

  • Good thing about Ebay--there will always be another one. Hopefully all those HOF rookie registry guys will get theirs and you'll have less competition on the next one
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

thanks for the updates. i will keep those prices in mind. though the one that the post was about was quite sharp. maybe the buyers thought they might be able to crack and resubmit it?

The Hutson is pretty indicative of the NFL HOF RC market...I've been collecting the set for 8 years now, and the prices have steadily climbed. Back in 2000 or so you could score a nice PSA 8 Hutson for around $350. These days, you won't touch it for under $1,000. Of course there are exceptions, and variants in price are typically due to the centering/corners/color registration of the card...So PSA 8's can vary anywhere between an ugly $800 and a nicely centered $1500...

I used to think the same thing, "Let the other HOF RC collectors get theirs and then I can score mine cheaper, later."...Problem with that is the set is growing by leaps and bounds the numbers of collectors with listed sets. In 4 years it has gone from 5 collectors to 63 collectors..Averaging around 15 new sets added each year. For me, waiting ended up costing me more..Cards I had a max price point of $200 were selling for $250 a few years back..Now the same card is selling for $600...Couple of more years and it will be $900..lol...All part of the "thrill of the chase"...

Treetop is absolutely correct...While it may be possible to score the card in the very near future for a better price..It won't be because the number of people looking for it is shrinking...The long term value of vintage football is only scratching the surface right now. Print runs of football from the 30s, 40s and 50s were MUCH lower than baseball cards of the same year. Take a look at what some of the baseball rookie cards from those same years are selling for, and that will give you a pre-cursor to where the football is headed...
