OK I have 500.00 to spend in the next thirty days ADVICE FROM THE WISE! Got my starter set worked ou

I collect heritage and that is about the only thing I have dealt with in the past three years or so! However, my wife bought a desktop for about 600.00 so I get the equal amount in whatever I want. I purchased a 2002 Heritage set for 100.00 shipped with 5 sp's missing and 4 base cards so I have 500.00 left!

I do not want wax to sit and look at unopened!

I would either like a vintage starter set or stud rookie, nice set etc.

I just do not want to buy a wax box or pack to stare at forever.

I have twins that just turned three and we enjoyed heritage football.

I would like to build the Topps Signature Series set of football(each card #'d to 50) would it be wise to buy those now or wait until they are old news?

You guys give me some advice and if you see any vintage starter sets(1960-1972 let me know)

Get a nice Rookie of a favorite player then work on his player registry set.

BUT, if you absolutely have to get rid of that cash, you
might consider buying ONE nice PSA-graded card from
    the 1950s.

$500 squandered on modern junk might have residual
value to your twins' grandchildren. Maybe not.

    PSA GRADED VINTAGE single card

or working on my heritage football autograph set and black refractor set

  • $500 on your heritage sets would be alot of fun if thats what you like. Lot's of buying power. If you get into vintage you will be unlocking a much more expensive venture. I agree vintage would be a better investment in more cases but fewer cards is a sure fire thing. I say do heritage and make it last, If you do vintage buy 1 card a trophy card =)

Put the $250 in each twins college fund.

That may mitigate the anger they feel towards when they are 18 and all you can offer up are
foily, mass produced garbage sets that they dont remember having so much fun with

they already get 50.00 per month per kid in their John Hancoock fund so I am spending this on me! This set or card will be for me for all the hard work I have put in raising twins the past three years!

I really want to buy a 1965 EXMT quality lot or partial set! I love that set for some reason- I built the 70 set when I was doing this as a business and sold it but hated the 70 design!

I truly just love the 65 set!! The cards are amazing to me!

Is that set doable or are the SP's crazy amounts?

Could I get a good start for 500.00?

Any board members have a partial set they would sell?

The other option would be 1960 or 1963, 1969 those are the four I truly want to own for me one day! I had a 69 set I bought about 9 years ago as a college student at a local show for 1000.00 and sold it on ebay for 2700.00 to fund my ebay/show business as a 20year old!
That set always haunted me- the cards were stunning to me! I think he got the top 10 cards graded and they came back 7's and 8's!

Give the guy a break. He want to spend $500.00 on collection. I think you can get a nice start on a 1965 set. Like the 1969 set there are no super expensive high numbers and you won't get killed by any expensive rookies like Rose, Seaver or Ryan. Yet, you still get nice rookies of Hunter, Perez and two of the most underrated players in Morgan and Carlton. I think I got my PSA 6 Carlton for about $80.00.

I suggest you get the top 30 or 35 players PSA graded to ensure you get what you are paying for. That is what I did when I built my 1969 set and I am glad I did it. This way if my family ever has to sell it will be easier to move with PSA graded stars. I have been collecting the top 30 cards graded PSA 6 (mostly) or 7 from each set of the 60's and it seems like the 65's sell for a premium vs. other years with the exception of 63 and maybe 67. Needless to say, it is a popular set.

I am sure you can get 300 to 350 Exmint to Nrmt cards for $500.00.

Pick the year you like and then purchase a nice raw starter lot for that year.

You can build the set that you like, purchase cards that have nice eye appeal, and not worry about grades.

You can get a nice start on a set from the '60s for $500.

And as far as what to collect, my only advice would be to buy what makes YOU happy. If you want to start a raw set, then thats what you do. I say just enjoy the extra spending cash and get something that will bring you happiness.

I can relate to what your asking about the money. I am the same way, I will think it over, ask fellow collectors and mull it over before I spend it. Being able to spend that sum of money (even though to some it may seem a small amount) is alot of fun, I hope you find exactly what you are looking for.

How about a nice small set that you can pick up cards along the way?

One set that I really like is 63F BB. Only 67 cards with the checklist.

You can do the set really nice in 7 or 8. And if ya don't mind cards in the 60-40 centering range - ya can get them way under SMR most of the time.

the set is doable in 7 and 8. The SP and hi numbers are not the tuff ones. The mid series cards are.

A few cards are priced to the moon. But most low pops are now available as the pops have increased. It is a beauty of a set.

    65's for sale here

    Good for you.
  • I say go crazy with it and buy something you've really wanted for a long time. I know the feeling when a lump sum of cash is laid on you and you're like, "What the heck do I do with this?!" Sounds like you've got your life and priorities already together, so go nuts! Buy something for yourself that maybe your kids would want one day too.
  • I agree with Stown, buy the Clemente Rookie. You have his picture as your avatar. If he is a guy you like, then buy a nicely centered Clemente rookie. It isn't a hard card to sell if you ever need the money.

Or put it towards Near Mint rookie cards of guys you have followed. You can get a near mint Seaver rookie for that price. Reggie Jackson rookie too. Those are good choices.

I've got some nice 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1964 Topps Giants I've been preparing for ebay. All are great sets to build (as is 1965). Let me know if any of these might float your boat.

As long as you a) meet your kids' savings goals, b) meet your retirement needs, c) pay your bills and d) have a little emergency fund tucked away, you should never feel guilty about a splurge or two.

  • How about combining two of these thought processes--go for a '65 Topps Clemente PSA 8. They run around $250 on Feebay. Good start to the '65 set and you'd still have plenty left over for some other cards...

  • 80s - my wife and I do them same as you. The last was a ring for her and a Palm LifeDrive and a few hundred in grading fees for me. The kicker is she bought the ring a few days after turning down the chance to buy a new Acura. She likes her four year old TL and wants to wait. I can't complain. All she does is work our finances, make us money and I get enough to build a collection.

When I decided to begin my first collection I settled on the year I was born, 1959. Maybe that appeals to you as your next venture. If not I would go with something vintage preferably early 60's or before.

Clemente is also a favorite of mine and is a great suggestion.

    Good luck on your decision.
  • Personally, I'd go with the '60 Topps set ...

You can get PSA 6-7 cards real cheap.

I'm doing the set in PSA 8 ... but sometimes regret it and thinkI should just go for well-centered 6's and 7's.

it's got a great list of HOFs and is a great design.

I've got 200 or so extras that range from VG-EX to NRMT. I'd be happy to help you get started for cheap. I've also got a handful of PSA 6's I don' t need as I've upgraded.

Good luck with whatever you choose....

Since I started putting me set together I've had SO much fun. Checking ebay every night for just the right additions, meeting other collector's, making trades, etc. One guy recently started a PSA 7 '60 set and I was able to help him kick of his set with some of my extras. I'm telling you, vintage set collecting is what this hobby is about!

Keep us posted about what you decide to do!

I can not tell you how much I appreciate the people who responded to my questions tonight! I really like the idea of starting a vinatage set but I prefer raw so I can put them in a binder and enjoy them. I like centered cards that are PSA 6 quality! I can afford to build a set over a year so in that condition from the 60's and it will be a great adventure searching for the cards

Again, thanks for your ideas and will either be 1960 or 1965 and I will start looking for lots on ebay and here!

If you have lots of either set let me know! If I can not find anythign appealing I may buy the Clemente PSA 8 1965 card! That was a great idea actually! I could buy a small lot of EXMT/NRMT 65's and the Clemente PSA 8 and have a nice start!

The Clemente rookie in PSA 4/5 is the other option!

I will see what I can find and be sure to let you all know what I buy! Thanks again for all your help this evening! It made my night!

If you think of anything else that will be awesome! I want to concentrate on one set or one card!

So tell me what do you like?

    Any particular year?

IMO, the biggest problem that people have with doing a set is getting so excited, they want to finish it at the expense of their sanity.

I've been working on my 63F BB set since Feb 04 - it's at about 60%?

I tried to put a card in tonite and it was rejected - I contacted the registry and linked proof of purchase from ebay.

Working on a set is like running a marathon - there's high points and low points - but it will be slow and steady. It's not a sprint - since ya can run out of steam before the finish line.

There's a lot of small cool sets that I like - 51T redbacks, 68T game card set e.g.

well I really like the 65 topps baseball set(would only do raw)
I like the 71 football set(my wifes birth year)
I love the 86 football set
I love the 84 and 85 football sets
1986-87 fleer basketball(have some raw that could grade PSA 9 from packs) ABout 20 cards or so!
my favorite cards I believe are hte 1986 Topps football set(however, I never thought it was cost effective to build a modern set in PSA registery)- am I mistaken?

That is my all time favorite card in football

My all time favorite BBALL set is the 86-87 fleer set! I ahve pulled several MJ's from BBKID in the past 5 years! I loved those cards!

Baseball I really love the 65 and 69 sets the most! I do not want to do a modern baseball set in PSA registry!

Their is only one player I want every card of and he is still a senior at Kentucky(Keenan Burton ALL SEC and will be All American next year).

We are friends and he is even a better person than player!

I will be the king of Keenan Burton PSA registery next year when he is drafted! He was projected third round so he came back for his senior season but had 70+ catches, 1000 yards and 12 td's!

    Hey 1980's collector-
Do you have interest in football? For $500.00 you can get a nice start on some of the early Bowman or leaf issues. All the sets have about 100-140 cards...give or take a few. If you set your goals on graded 4's or 5's or mid grade raws you can pick up some real nice stars and rookies or a bunch of commons.

By the way..I have three kids under six...and I think its great that you are rewarding yourself. My wife and I have an understanding...I don't drink, don't smoke, rarely go out with the guys...I spend my disposable income on cards..thats what I enjoy. Life is too short and we work too hard to not splurge and take care of ourselves sometimes. God Bless you and I hope you decide to spend the dough on something that brings joy to your life.

I understand why people would want to give that advice and I know your heart is in the right place - I just went back and realized you had given the advice to save for a rainny day.

But, in fairness to 1980 - it could look like a lecture. Many people buy when they shouldn't - the advice could be contrued as a shot - an ingenuous/self-righteous response - advice that many would not take for themselves. And this is not directed at any one individual - just my general impression - which I think is how I think TJ saw it.

We're all friends here - I don't think he was telling anyone how to respond to a thread - I took it more an a rhetorical retort to the advice.

Let's face it - I construed this as mad money that one wanted to spend - and yes you guys are right - the thing to do is save it - but what fun would that be? image

No one knows better than you how important it is to plan for a "rainny day."

Stone, that is exactly how I saw it. The guy has some discretionary dollars and is looking for advice on what cards to buy. We have no knowledge of his financial situation to assume that he needs to save money. Maybe he already has a rainy day fund and a college fund for his kids. I spend about 2000 to 3000 a year on cards, does that mean I should put it in a college fund for my daughter? If that's the case, then nobody with kids should spend anything on cards.

I wasn't sure if people were trying to be funny or were serious. Like you said Stone, it is mad money the guy wants to spend. My comments were not aimed at any specific individual. I just thought people should keep it related to sports cards, which I believe was the intent of 80's post.

Anyway, it sounds like he wants to get a start on a 1965 raw set and I think he made a great chocie. However, it can be tedious grabbing the last few cards to finish a set. I am working on a EX-NRMT 1959 Topps set and need about 100 cards. I have taken a break on it for awhile because I grew tired of chasing 1 and 2 at a time.

  • Nathan,

... just saw the end of this thread.

I'm just thrilled you're gonna build raw a set I'm passionate about and are going to do it with the exact a partial set I started as a kid ....

There are a lot of great '60 Topps collectors out there, building in a variety of conditions.

Welcome aboard -- and remeber: ENJOY THE JOURNEY!

  • In my opinion, the 1977 Topps set (raw) is undervalued and a great way to spend $500. You might even complete a high grade set with that much money. The problem with starting a '65 set is you won't complete it with $500 and who knows when you'll have another $500 to add to it? I'm also a big Pete Rose card freak, buying his 70's cards in bulk waiting for the "day" lol.
