75 topps Nolan Ryan PSA 9 sells for almost $3,000

ebay auction ended tonight. Final price 2,945. And it was off-center, although no qualifier. An example of Ryan's enormous popularity, because there are 20 nines graded and 2 tens. Not exactly a rare card.

Where's the love for Seaver and Palmer, who were much better?

...and his feedback rating isn't the best that I've seen, either.

  • People respect Nolan cuz he was so damn DOMINATING!!! No one has more strike outs, no one is even close to his record 7 no hitters (he also holds the record for most one hitters, it's like 9 or something) He's got the single season strikeout record, when he was on, fuggetaboutit!!!!
  • Ryan and Bob Feller both threw 12 one hitters...........

i think it is kind of cute when people have their favorite players listed in the bottom line of their postings and then try to make us believe that they were or are something they are not. it shows that hero worship is not dead.

sadly here are the facts of nolan ryan based on numbers. if you want opinions here is mine. he was a tough pitcher who kept himself in incredible shape and was able to keep throwing deep into his 40's. an amazing feat. on certain nights he was as good as anyone. he had a way with the media the way brett favre does with that renegade cowboy image that makes the media melt. when dealing with the media he could be a man's man the way john wayne was.
however certain nights don't make a career. he was never the best pitcher in his league during any season!
    here are the career numbers:

ryan record 324-292=.526 winning % e.r.a 3.19 when league e.r.a was 3.57 or .38 better than rest of league. never won a cy young best finish was 1 2nd and 1 3rd. whip of 1.247.

seaver record 311-205=.603 winning % e.r.a 2.86 when league e.r.a was 3.64 or .78 better than rest of league. won 3 cy youngs and finished 2nd twice and 3rd twice. whip of 1.121.

roger clemens (still going of course) record 348-178=.662 winning % e.r.a 3.10 when league e.r.a was 4.36 or 1.36 better than rest of league. won 7 cy youngs and finished 2nd once and 3rd twice. whip of 1.170.

steve carlton record 329-244=.574 winning % e.r.a 3.22 when league e.r.a was 3.70 or .48 better than rest of league. won 4 cy youngs and finished 2nd once. whip of 1.247. i would think even the most ardent carlton supporter would agree that his last years were terrible. he went 15-28 his last four seasons and hung on way too long. even said in 1972 he had one the greatest season if not THE greatest season in pitching. he went 27-10 with a team that was 59-97. the next highest win total on the team was 7. if he had played on even an average team he would have won 30 games. that season was also shortened a few games due to labor issues.

randy johnson (still going but probably tailing off despite new contract) record 280-147=.656 winning % e.r.a 3.22 when league e.r.a was 4.43 or 1.21 better than rest of league. won 5 cy youngs and finished 2nd three times. whip of 1.164.

these are just modern pitchers. if you want start digging into walter johnson, christy mathewson, bob feller or bob gibson and you will see that ryan is no where near these guys in life time performances.
  • Yeah, see, to me, Seaver was the more consistent pitcher.
Ryan had the blazer and the Ks, no doubt, but he LOST nearly 300 games!
And forget about what they say about him playing on bad teams, the teams he played for were almost always playing .500 ball even without his stats factored in.
That being said, Von Ryan did have the longevity.
But, it's always puzzled me why Seaver's cards aren't on par with Ryan's. Heck, Seaver even got a higher first ballot percentage than Ryan. I mean, that says something.
Though, full disclosure, I watched Seaver pitch win #299 in Boston way back when.

Then again... Ryan does have the fact that he turfed Robin Ventura during that mound melee ... which did kinda add to his "John Wayne" persona.

Putting the pitchers debate aside, this just seems like a large sum of money for a card that is rather plentiful. I guess there is enough demand so the price is high. Just amazing to me.

There is no question in my mind that Seaver and Carlton were better than Ryan. That being said, how good a player is does not always drive how popular their cards are. Look at Joe Morgan and Frank Robinson. Joe Morgan played for the 70's Reds one of the most popular teams of all time and his cards are cheap. Frank Robinson was a triple crown winner and I have seen 1957 Topps Rookies in PSA 5 barely break a $100.

Look at the discrepancy between Mays and Mantle cards. Most would say Mays was the better player and you can get a PSA 7 or 8 Mays for the price of PSA 5 Mantle. How many memorable moments a player has and their charisma seems to be as big of a driving force in value as how good they were. Just look at the price of Maris cards.

To get on topic, anyone who pays thousands of dollars for a PSA 9, when you can find a PSA 7 or 8 that is almost as nice is crazy. I guess if you got it you mine as well flaunt it.

Stone, that is a beautiful card. Though, I would have to sell it for 3 grand if someone offered it to me. Just imagine all of the nice PSA 7 and 8 cards you can buy for that money or in your case a Turkey Red or two. I guess that is what makes this hobby interesting. There is something for everyone.

I think I remember you mentioning you were either given that card for helping someone out or bought it raw for a pretty cheap price. Either way you made out big.

Brack attack- No, I wasn't kidding when I said Seaver and Palmer were better than Ryan. Lots of pitchers who played when Ryan did were better, including Steve Carlton, Juan Marichal, Bob Gibson, and Roger Clemens to name a few.

You may be thinking of most popular, which would be Ryan.
  • Alright, alright!!! I was wrong about Ryan being the best ever. But, he's got quite alot of records that will never be broken. You've got to give him that.

Reason for someone to pay such a high price for a card is because he wants to be first in the Nolan Ryan basic set on the PSA Registry. It's all about being number one on the Registry sets, and if you've got the money you will definately be number one. But, I'm number one right now and probably won't be much longer because I'm just a broke Nolan Ryan fan.

Fitz that card wasn't worth the 3k you paid for it because you know what you are still in SECOND place, HAHA!!!!! I'll pick it up for much cheaper now that you have it and won't have any competition when bidding on it, if it ever comes up for auction again.
