TTM reply story I had to share

Spurred on by the many TTM autograph request stories in these threads, I started sending TTM requests myself this past year. I wanted to find something different to chase so I started writing letters to Olympic track and field athletes. I have actually had a lot of success and have gotten many hand written notes and photos back with the athletes sharing their stories, etc.
Then today, I open my mail to find this nice note inside: "I'd advise you to find an athletic outdoor activity or sport and put your vigor, activity and time into it rather than solicit autographs PRC/2007".
This came back from Philip Conley, he was a javelin thrower in the 1956 Olympics. The ironic part of this is I just ran a marathon on Sunday so I think I might write back and share with him where I have put my "vigor"

The only way to top the story is if it turned out to be an autopen.
<< <i>Haw haw, that guy rules! Who but a shut-in would take the time to actually write that back, I love it. Still, you gotta admit it's far more unique than if he had just scribbled his name.

For the uniqueness of it I do plan on keeping it my collection and look back at it with fondness, at least he initialed it for me.

You should write back and tell him you are confined to a wheelchair and near death and that your doctors were hoping this new hobby would give you a reason to keep living!

"I'm a pimp. At my younger age, my athletic outdoor activity is getting busy on the back porch. Too bad yours retired a long time ago. - Play On....
P.S. We have something in common. I got a javalin too, but I don't go on a field holding it and slinging it around."

you got me hooked. how do I go about doing this TTM autograph chasing?
I wanted an autographed portrait of HOF tennis star Steffi Graf. On her website, she invites those that are interested to write her at an address in Germany with a SASE and it would be sent. Ok, so I write a nice letter with a SASE and just send it hoping it won't be a ghost writer....
For Katarina Witt, it says she cannot honor autograph requests.....I guess she is very busy.
For Frank Thomas, he gives an address where to send cards to get autographed. I guess that's easy enough.
What about athletes that don't have so many requests? How does one get their address to begin with?
I guess the standard practice would be:
1. Try and find the address
2. Write a nice letter and mention why you like the particular athlete
3. Include photo or card to be autographed
4. Include a thick SASE
5. Mail away
Am I missing something here?
I have two autographed 5X7 photos of football stars. I guess I should expand on that and collect many more 5X7s? Or just get what I can?
Any tips will be appreciated.

Let me try and give a quick run down. You are are the right track. First a couple of websites
Harvey's Address list for sale
Sportscollectors.net
The Sportscollectors.net site is a web community set up around requesting autographs. For an annual fee you can sign up for the site and it is packed full of autograph requests success and failures, tips in the community space as well as several addresses. I look through this when trying to send out to people to see signing habits, etc.
The Harvey address list is one of the top lists you can purchase and the 2007 updated list just came out. You will see many of the people on the other site refer to finding address through Harvey's list.
For others you can use Internet searches, including Google, Whitepages, etc. to sometimes get lucky. I also will Wikipedia.org search and find out what people are doing post retirement for leads.
Otherwise your standard process sounds good. You can also search this site for other TTM (through the mail) threads. I know for instance Brianwinters fan is a very successful TTM requester and has posted many photos herein. Good luck.

let's seriously all send one out on a specific day and get a kick out of this old fart!
I bet we can get one and piss him off at the same time!
I would just let it go. Maybe try again in 6 months if you absolutely have to have his autograph.

Here's a pic of his wife - make a copy and ask if he's still married - and then ask him...
Do you want any naked pictures of her?
