Any ticket colletors here?

I picked up a bunch of stuff from a guy I work with who was unloading his collection. I got a bunch of old game programs for he 40's (bowl games, World Series, ect.) When I was putting the stuff in sleves, two ticket stubs from the 1941 Cotton Bowl fell out. They are in great shape on the front (The black spot on the top scan is from the scanner). I looks as if these were glued to a scrap book at one time. Just wondering if anyone has an idea on a price range on these and if the glue on the back makes them ungradeable. If they are gradable, what do you think these would grade?

Thanks

I'm sure they have value to the right collector although the damage to the back is going to lessen it somewhat

They are gradeable with the bad back. I saw a graded one just today that had been taped in a scrapbook. The authentic grade would be the way to go.

just a thought as to why grading it as "authentic" would help...i think it's fairly obvious that theyare authentic or is there a black market of 1941 Cotton Bowl ticket stubs?

    Nice find!

How should one preserve ticket stubs and programs? I kept the ones I got from the games I attended. I put them in card sleeves or album pages for protection. I guess its not wrong but may not be the best way to present them. I only have a handful, so all I need to do is preserve them and not worry about presentation. (I use only ultra pro platinum or other safe products)

Let me know of any tips and thank for sharing this.

DeutscherGeist - I have never had any tickets or stubs like this before, so I'm not really sure how to protect them. I am half tempted to send them in for grading just so they will be slabbed and kept in good shape. As for the programs. I keep them in a top loader magazine holder. They work great with two programs to a holder since most of these things have about 20 pages in them (with the exception of the 1946 Orange Bowl which was about 100 pages).

I am just not sure what kind of resale value these things have.

For what it's worth, I'm on the West Coast and find old Rose Bowl tickets for $10-25 pretty frequently at antique stores and flea markets. Yours are in nicer condition than many that I see though, however the paper loss does detract from value (it's not as bad as with cards, ticket collectors tend to concentrate more on fronts). There is a market for them but it's not really that large.

This 1944 full unused ticket sold for $667.00

But 1948 and 1958 Cotton Bowl ticket STUBS went unsold at $69 and $59 respectively.

As to storage, I find Card Savers work well for storing tickets as well as cards. Cardboard Gold makes a lot of different sizes, Card Saver IIs work fine for most common small tickets, the Card Saver IIIs work well for oversized tickets, and Card Saver Vs for the really long ones.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the grading and if you are going to sell, sell as is.

Lenny Steren, might be able to help you. He authenticates and also has built up quite a storehouse of knowledge. He deals in tix as his own business.
  • Those are awsome... that's all I got.

Those tics are beauties - and yes - too bad they're missing paper on the back.

I know there's a collector of everything - so you know there's Cottonbowl aficionados out there.

Grading - if it's for you to keep - might be fine but in terms of resale - I think ya need to do more research.
These may not sell for much money - even if there were no back damage? I don't know.

Here's how one more typically finds stubs - beat to crap. Again, an Army-Navy fan would want this - but let's face it - how many are out there?

I also found this tic in a magazine with a bunch of other stubs.

    Good luck

Thanks for all the input guys. I e-mailed Lenny about the tickets and he gave me some great info. Thanks Ripken. Right now I am leaning toward keeping them (atleast 1) to frame with the 1941 program. If I can sell the other for a price that is worth it, I'll explore that route. Maybe it can cover the framing cost of the program and stub.

Stone - I never even thought about it until you said something, but it never occured to me there might be a registered set for ticket stubs. Sure enough there is a guy collecting Cotton Bowl stubs and he is missing the 41 stub. I may just have to see if we can work something out. Once again, thanks.
