Hey now! New to the boards...

Hi. I thought I ought to check in and say hello to all of you, being new to the boards. I've been reading through all the old threads while waiting for my account approval, and it looks like a fun place. I've especially enjoyed the pack rip threads, just missed out on the current one but am looking forward to following it from the sidelines. Great stuff!
Collecting-wise, I'm a bit eclectic I suppose. I grew up in the 80s, and at the start it was all baseball. I never really got into speculation and the like as some pals of mine, but of course every time I made an attempt I failed hilariously (SEE: '89 Upper Deck High Series, oh brother!), so I quickly discovered I wasn't cut out for that side of things. Then the 90's hit, which meant Shaq, so of course I dumped all my money into basketball. That was fun until it became painfully clear that the early 90's draft classes were some of the worst ever, not to mention that they made about 17 billion cards. By that time all sportscards had exploded with inserts and I soured on the hobby in general. Back then we thought companies went too far with their one-per-box inserts like Beam Teams and First Day Issues and the like, and now they have a billion 1/1's and it's just swamped. To me though the best part about modern cards is that autographs are so much easier to come by.
I don't really go for modern stuff too much, although some of the heritage and the A&G set are sweet. I started out collecting again a couple years ago and I began by collecting baseball stars from the past, so my beaters of '52 Topps Feller, '53 Bowman Campy and T206 Tinker and the like were pretty cheap and before I knew I was sucked in and it grew from there.
These days I'm slowly building a low grade T205 set and a mid-grade '53 Bowman set (will probably end up entering in the set registry), and both have been very enjoyable. The key for me is keeping things realistic and interesting. I also have an oddball set I've been chewing on, which is to get a playing-years-issued card from each of the players interviewed in Ritter's "The Glory of Their Times", which really cemented the love of the tobacco era for me. Nice thing about it is that I get to learn about all the bizarre little sets from back in the day, and get an example from many of them thanks to varied careers of the interviewees.
I hail from So Cal, and naturally it's true; aside from Bob Dylan there is no greater voice to me than Good Ol' Vin Scully, probably my all-time baseball hero. I'm a life-long Dodgers fan and as such hate the Giants like every good little Dodger fan should, yet I've accepted the guilty fact that I love absolutely love John McGraw, heh heh. Anyway, hope to join in the fun around here!

Welcome Vin
You've picked a couple of really nice sets to do! Good luck.
I'm a Dodger fan as a kid and collect Brooklyn stuff. I've posted stuff in the past but would like to share one of my favorite items since it's a privotal piece - the Dodger's first WS championship!
55WS Press Pins
I also have a program from the game. Unfortunately I don't have stubs but do have from the 52WS.
I think that Vin's got the silky smooth voice - very characteristic and identifiable! I was also a big Mel Allen fan. TWIB notes and all that.
Again, I wish you luck on the sets and don't be a stranger.
