Prince Fielder Rookie Cards: Upside?

Does anyone have an idea of the relative current prices of high end Prince Fielder rookie cards and can estimate the potential increase in these cards if he has a breakthrough season next year (or the year after)? Does playing in milwaukee hurt his value? Can the value of his rookie cards see the same rise as Ryan Howards?...or will they be in the same range as players like Lance Berkman or Mark Teixiera...both of whom had similar increases in their stats their first few years in the majors, but a relative stagnation in the prices of their rookie cards? thanks.

Good question. If he put up Ryan Howard numbers, I could see his cards taking a huge spike. Though, I don't see that happening. I see him being more in the Lance Berkman range. Playing in Milwaukee is definitely a minus.

I think Fielder does have a fair amount of upside thanks to his not being an overwhelming sensation this year. Short-sighted prospectors have moved on to the next thing. I think Milwaukee could have an exciting team very soon. They've developed a lot of talent in the farm system, though so has Tampa Bay and they have yet to actually figure out how to use it. Fielder is a cornerstone of that building process. While being in Milwaukee starts them out a step behind, if you build it the TV will come. A 95-game winner chasing a division win or wild card spot will put them on ESPN a lot, and making the playoffs could turn them into the year's sweetheart story. That would raise all boats, and big individual performances would raise them even more proportionately. Fielder hit .271/.347/.483 with 28 homers in the majors at age 22, very solid. A 40-homer season this year or next could make today's prices look like bargains, even if the Brewers are still the Brewers, and if he approaches 50 it'll be a big seller's market.

  • Funny story. Prince Fielder lived a block away from me while his dad was playing with Toronto. He was always this pudgy little kid. Real nice. A friend of mine used to hang out with him. Kelly Gruber would swing by in his SUV and pick him and his dad up to go to the ballpark. And there were always STACKS of pizza boxes on their curb come garbage day.
