My Aunt gave me her sons cards they collected when they were kids. They were cards from the 50's, 60's and early 70's. I was 6 or 7 so needless to say alot of them ended up in my bike spokes and the rest of them ended up in a pile on our basement floor where our beloved dog "Dodger" promptly urinated on them. They all ended up in a large hefty bag and took a trip to the city dump image

I take much better care of my cards now image

  • serious collecting......when my company went public a couple of years ago. If it weren't for that (i.e. infusion of disposable income), I would probably just be doing what I had been doing which is buying shrink wrapped and raw modern sets. What has fueled my interest, however, was the combination of the great information on this board, the accessibility of cards on ebay from some outstanding sellers, and the service that PSA and other reputable grading companies provide for this hobby.

I started by buying wax packs in '62 at the local drug store. I've still got most of the '60s stuff I bought. I quit in '69, started again in '81, quit again in '92 and started back up in '04 or so just to expand my Kirby collection and start a '62Topps Registry Set.

  • Though I'm Canadian, my grandfather lived in Boston. When he passed away in 1978, we went down to the funeral. I was six years old and because the house was in such turmoil and stuff, the parents used to send the kids (me and my cousins) with money to go to the corner store. I started buying 78 Topps Baseball (still remember the Len Randel card for some reason).
When I got back to Canada I started buying OPC Baseball and Hockey in the winter. Collected 78 and 79 baseball but stopped in 79-1980 to focus on Hockey cards (wish I still had those Gretzky rookies). Anyway, collected hockey from 80-83 in the winters and OPC Baseball stickers and albums (not cards) in the summer. Then at summer camp in 1984 they had one box of 1984 OPC baseball (before I even knew who Mattingly was) at the camp store. I just kept using my allowance money to buy a pack every two days. And brought them all home from camp to find I had pretty much a set. I wanted to complete the set so my dad brought me to a comic book show (with sportscards) and I completed the set. But at that show I became hooked on collecting.
In 1985, I bought a few boxes of OPC and Leaf and discovered my doubles were worth money.
    And so it began...

  • My mom probably bought me one of those combo packs from a grocery store. The one's that had topps cards from different years. This was circa 1985/86. I recall the blue 86 Topps wrappers, and the black borders cards. Then I got more into it all in 1987, with football and baseball. My buddies and I started to go to the shops/ conventions/shows. Took a break from like 1995 until 2003.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I was six and our family was on vacation in Colorado in 1970 and Dad went to get some snacks to bring back to the motel. He also brought back some packs of baseball cards for my brothers and me. Probably two packs each. I don't think I had ever seen a baseball card before then. I still remember two cards we got were Tom Seaver, and Hank Aaron's brother, I think his name was Tommie.

2nd grade. Kid in class gave me 5 1971 baseball cards. The first was a Jim Colborn. One of the other 71s was a Thurman munson.

Then had a 6th grade teacher who collected and half the guys in class collected the 1975s.

  • Late 60's early 70's my dad would come home on pay day and give us our allowance. 60 cents for me! I'd run down to the corner drug store and buy 6 packs of hockey cards.

I can vividly remember walking home from the store, stuffing my mouth full of gum, and going through the cards one by one. "Got him, got him, need him, got him, need him". It was '71 when I'd pull a Dryden Topps rookie and rip the card in two. I never hated someone so much in my life! I was 8! I collected until '75 then found other interests... In 1988 my dad asked me if I wanted all my cards which he had stored in shoe boxes in the basement. Thanks dad!

    I'v been back ever since.
