Moving to Maryland..What shows are there?

Hi everyone. I am going to be moving from Michigan to Maryland next month. Are there any decent shows around the Silver Spring or College Park area? Thanks in advance.

Not many at all. I've lived in MD my whole life(mainly the eastern shore, but I live in PG County/Temple Hills for the past 1-2 years) and since I've moved up here, I know of 4 shops in the whole city. There are more autograph signing shows than card shows; not sure where the card stores are. I'm a subcontractor(residential renovations) and so I work from northern Virginia(Fairfax, Alexandria) to Baltimore and everywhere in between.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.

Hi , I live in the People's Republic Of Maryland. Hope your from the city as the politics here in this area are from of the fundamental LEFT . My family of 5 sons and a wonderful wife have survived inspite , go figure .

There are almost no shows anywhere near here. The only shows are the ones that the gangs put on nightly.( Sorta, maybe kidding). Its possible to network here with some of the local shops. Some are wonderfull , others ask you to bend over and are to be avoided after your first visit. One thing that I did was to get on Ebay, pull up what was interesting to me , that arrange it from the shortest distance. I've been able to find some great people to buy or trade with , using this method. In the northern VA area, there are some great ebayers that deal in sportscard.

Good luck on the move, its very beautiful here. I hope that you find some cards friends close by. What a person truely looks for in life they will find. Sonny

I try to make the drive to the Chantilly, VA (Fairfax) once or twice a year (they might have 3 or 4 shows a year??). It is a decent size show with lots of (expensive) autograph guests.

Hi Paul, and I would like to welcome you to Maryland I live in Lothian just West of Upper Marlboro if your looking for card shows I
would recommend you check out the Beckect on line show calendar here is what they have for the next 3 months so far. I have gone
    to the following shows-

    Glen Burnie Marley Station Mall
    Glen Burnie Arthur Slade
    Hanover Arundel Mills Mall
    Baltimore White Marsh Mall

I would recommend the Glen Burnie Arthur Slade shows have always like that show good dealers
very nice for the most part the other 3 show at the malls I find to be a waste of time. I would also
recommend the Chantilly Virginia show alot of everything there plus autograph signers on the weekends.
If you don't know the area that well I would be welling to swing on by and we could ride together to those
if your intrested and I'm not working.

What do you collect Paul? I am mostly working on a Frank Thomas Master Set currently 3rd.

  • Paul, welcome to the great state of Maryland.....We got everything, high taxes, lots O traffic, insane house prices, terrific food (crabs and beer) and this little pond called the Atlantic Ocean, not to mention the local creek, The Chesapeake Bay. Add in 6 professional sports teams and big time ACC sports and I think you'll find something to do. If your moving to the Silver Spring or College Park area (I have lived in both) you'll find a few shops in Montgomery County, a couple in Frederick County, a decent shop in Laurel and a very expensive one in Ellicott City. Baltimore has a good shop as well right off I95, pm me if you want more details. Show wise, like BigHurt said, the mall shows that go from Glen Burnie/Arundel Mills/Owings Mills/White Marsh malls are lame, just plain lame. Same dealers, same crap.....The Arthur Slade show does have other dealers and its a pretty nice setup. I can't speak for Chantilly as I have never been to that one (Road Trip??)...Good Luck with the move and welcome to the State, I sure as hell hope you like traffic....If you have any other questions please feel free to pm me.

  • I went to the last show at Chantilly, and for what it was, I liked it. I hadn't been to a show in about 6 years so it was a good time. Also, I live off Exit 4 north of the Woodrow Wilson so it wasn't much of a road trip for me.

PAUL - you're just a couple hours to the EPSCC Philly shows.
They were held at Ft Washington, PA. now its Reading, PA
for the next 1 or 2. The next show is March 2-4, its one of the
largest shows in the country outside of Sportsfest & the National.
I'm close to the Md border and I wouldn't think of missing it...jay
  • Well thanks for all the answers everyone. I guess I got so used to where and when all the card shows were in Michigan that I forgot about the beckett site to look them up in other states. For those of you that asked, right now I am focusing on buying un-opened wax from the 70's and 80's and get cards of mine autographed. I kind of have all the other cards I want right now so that is it. I'll be there in 2 weeks.

  • Welcome. Although I live on Capitol Hill in D.C. I am familiar with the shows in the area too. And I concur with those postings above that the Hanover Arundel Mills shows are not interesting at all. The most recent show I attended there, last summer, was in the food court area of the mall. I also have hit a show last year at the Holiday Inn in Tysons Corner, VA. Small, but very friendly dealers, willing to deal. I found out about that show in the classifieds of the Washington Post.

I do recommend the shows out in Chantilly, which is about 30 minutes from downtown D.C. The show is large, has signings and an assortment of dealers selling all sorts of items. Not as many graded cards as I had hoped, but a nice show nonetheless.

I do hope to attend an Arthur Slade show sometime soon.

    Again, welcome to the area.
