Got outbid by .01 cent, I'm in an outrage!!!

Okay, so all week I've been eyeballing a Jimmy Burke T206 with a dark blue back from Polar Bear. I thought it was very appealing to the eye and decided that i wanted it. I was ahead with the bidding till 8 sec's were left. I had a high bid of $40 and then with 8 sec's left I typed in $45 and it said the auction was over and the person won with $40.01. IS THIS RIGHT?! HOW COULD THIS BE?! SOMEONE BRING ME SOME SANITY!!!!

post a link so we can see the bid history. the winner's bid probably just made the next bid increment

Email the winner and see if he'd take some Bonds cards in exchange for the T206.
  • LOL!!! Yea, I'm sure that would go over really well!!!

    I think so.

Your max bid was $40, but at the time the winner bid, the current bid level was only $37. He might have only been a penny over your max, he only had to meet the dollar increment at $38, I think.

Besides, it's a decent card, but I think you could get a better T206 for $40 or get a Burke that's in similar condition for less.

  • Thanks. I have now cooled down.

One thing you learn after being in this hobby for a long time - there's always another one. And, with Ebay, that "other one" may be right around the corner.

  • That is why you should never bid an on the dollar amount. If you wuld have bid an odd amount like $40.03 you would have won by 2 cents, seeing he wouldn't have had time to rebid.

    Yes, Yawie's right.

Here's the ironic thing though. Suppose a third person, like me for instance, bid on the auction at the end and I put in a bid for $40 with a minute left.

    Guru would've won the auction!!!

If I would have bid $40, Guru's $40 previous bid would've taken precendent over mine, bringing the bid to $40. The the eventual winning bidder's bid would have been thrown out by not being up the the next bidding increment.

    Confusing??

But like ctsox said, there'll be another, and probably sooner rather than later.

Good luck on the next one.

Thats true unless the winning bidder placed a bid of $41 or more. You dont see what his max bid was, just that it was enough to outbid the $40.

I have learned my lesson. If I really want a card on ebay, I use justsnipe. Set the snipe to the max I will pay and see what happens. I dont always win but I usually do. The times I dont is when the bid is already past my snipe or if the high bidder has a max higher than my snipe.

  • Well with that auction, we all know that the winning bidder's highest bid was $40.01, seeing Guru's max was $40. Ebay wouldn't go $40.01 if the winning bidder had placed any bid higher than that. If they would have bid $41 or more than we wouldn't know what their max was.
