Question on 1992 Topps Black Gold Winners cards

How were these cards distributed?? I stopped collecting in '91 and wasn't aware of how these cards ended up in circulation. The reason I'm asking is that I bought a cellophane-wrapped "pack" of the cards at an antique show today. I wasn't sure if Topps distributed them this way or if this was done post-distribution. Any insight would be appreciated!

They were randomly distributed in all the different Topps packs (Stadium Club, etc) as I recall. I have a Ripken PSA 10 in my Ebay store right now, so I know they do grade them.

    Hope this helps,

    Thanks, Guy!

Do you think Topps cello-wrapped these cards I have? If so, I'm tempted to keep them as-is, otherwise I'll most likely rip it and see if there's a Kirby card I need inside.

I believe Topps did wrap these. If I have my story straight you could either get them randomly inserted in packs or you could pull a redemption card that entitled you to the entire set. My guess is that this is one of those sets.

Just to make things tougher for you, there is a Puckett in the set image. The set is 44 cards, so if it feels like there's 44 cards in there it's probably one of those Topps-distributed set. The checklist is pretty good-- the set has Puckett, of course, and Gwynn, Maddux, Ozzie, Clemens, Junior, McGwire and Winfield, amongst others-- and I 'think' there are some low pops in this set as well, so if you're planning a submission anytime soon you may want to check the pop reports and see if it would be worth crackin'.

Aha! I believe you're right about the 44-card subset size. I just did a search and found 4 sets ("ABCD") were made. Mine must be the "C" set (see scan above) as that is what appears in the lower right-hand corner of the top card.

Thanks again for all the additional info...
  • These cards were distributed in wax AND vending also...each vending case had I believe one brick of 450 Gold cards and 50 Black Gold cards...and a few redemptions. The redemptions were for entire sets....yes..ABCD

The players pictured on the front card of your factory sealed C set...are the actual cards in the bag. I don't think Puckett was in set C!!?!!

I don't think the mini-pictures include Kirby either. Drat!

The Kirby card isn't listed in the Set Registry composition yet, so I couldn't get the card number. It must be an elusive one. I gotta find a copy!

Thanks for all of the help!

Since 1993 Topps was one of the first packs I bought when I first got back into collecting cards, I think I can offer some insight.

For 1993 Topps, there were two kinds of inserts; Topps Gold and Topps Black Gold. You got one Topps gold card per pack, three per rack pack, five per $1.99 jumbo pack, two in some other kind of pack (forget which), and ten per factory set. The Black Gold cards were randomly inserted in all these pack types (basic Topps brand only though) and three per factory set. And yes, there were redemption cards for quarter, half, and in Series 2, whole Topps Black Gold sets, which unfortunatley drastically lowered the value of the sets. This was done similarly in 1994, but I believe you got four gold cards per jumbo and five gold cards per jumbo rack pack that year.

I have thought about getting the 1993 Topps Gold and Black Gold (very nice looking sets I think) someday. Brings back fond memories of pulling those cards in the packs back in 1993. image

  • The Black Gold cards were inserted into 1993 packs and were fairly hard to get individually. Topps dropped the ball by inserting redemption cards for entire portions of the set (A, B, C, or D) that were not terribly difficult to pull. Some of the redemption cards were for more than one portion (A+B etc.). This led to quite a few copies floating around. The "cello" wrap was from the redemption and the cards inside should match the checlist on the top. The set DOES include Kirby Puckett and one can be found fairly easily typing Puckett Black Gold on the other venue. Topps also made another Black Gold set in 1994 which includes a Puckett card as well.

I remember like it was yesterday - all the Topps gold and black gold mania!

It all started in 1992 - and the key card was #6 Brien Taylor RC.

Randomly inserted were winner "scratch-off" game cards also - some very enterprising people realized that if ya put a halogen light to the back of the card - ya could win the game every time! It took Topps some time to correct the game cards by producing more opaque/thicker stock. But the damage was done - the market was flooded with "winner" Gold cards. As one might know - these gold card could be differentiated from the inserted "gold" cards by the addition of "winner" on them.

It was fun for a bit.

  • Mike,

It was all the rage at the time for dealers who had store front to break the factory gold sets as well. And raffle cards 50 cents to $1 each (depending on the dealer)....so the entire set would be sold off card for card.

I had customers coming in with $20-$30 a DAY....

"Has anyone got the Brian Taylor yet??...What about Ryan..Griffey and Thomas??"

At the time the Taylor was going like $75.00....the others $50 each...

I rememer breaking one set at a show and selling team sets....$10- $40 each depending on the team..

    AHHHHHHHHHHH the good old days......

Heck I had a 1992 Winners Gold set out at the show today....$20......and I ended up taking it home!! lol
  • That is some fun background on these Gold cards! I just missed the feeding frenzy -- thank goodness! I should be able to pick up some for reasonable prices then. That's great to hear.

    Thanks for sharing the experiences!

And now you can go to BBCE and get Mr. Taylor and the rest of the gang for about that much. image Times have changed; for the better if you're a buyer, for the worst if you're a seller. image
