What Made You Decide To Collect What You Collect Right Now???

Title Says It All!

For me, with game used memorabilia, I decided just a few years ago when I had an amazing collection of game used cards. I had a lot of nice logo patch cards. But after I had realized that game used memorabilia didn't cost much more, I decided to switch. I had to learn quite a lot in order to figure out what's real and what isn't, but it all paid off and I now have a pretty nice collection building up. I ended up selling all my game used cards, but now when I walk into my room, it's like walking into the Hall Of Fame.

  • My collection has always been very diverse and thats how it will always be

I collect just about anything and everything that has to do with sports, escpecially of the teams i root for.

I collect everything from authentic auto'd jerseys to raw cards to yearbooks

I would have one helluva sports basement if i ever got around to displaying my items

kylehess10, i like the idea of collecting game used items, it's the one area i've yet to dive into. Hopefully one day i'll pick up something nice

Sounds good. I've read your other posts and have visited your web page and you seem very knowledgable about the area of game used items

If i decide to purchase something in the future i'll probablly get in touch with you first

It's not so much as what I collect as what I "don't" collect.

Over the years, I realized I lacked focus - and had no clear cut goals.

So balancing budget and goals has narrowed the field immensely.

I have about 5 areas that I enjoy.

So I am not the only one who collects without focus?
I also need to set and stick to a budget and concentrate on what is within my financial means.

Actually that's what a lot of game used memorabilia collector's say about me. Here's a funny quote from another site:

"kylehess10 what is the focus of your collection? you seem to buy the most random things"

I really do seem to buy the most random things, lol

I have owned most mainstream cards, it has just been a matter of resources. I now collect 1971 Milk Duds which, although inexpensive, are difficult to locate.

1971 was prime collecting year for me as a kid - these are just cool. Plus, nobody else seems top be interested in them. image

  • Ever since day 1 of collecting, it was always anything sports related. Doesnt matter if its pre-war, modern, game used memorabilia, books, movies, tickets, posters, games, if its sports related, I collect it. No rhyme or reason, no method or direction. Unfortunately, when you add in the comics and models, lobby cards and original art, along with just about anything else that has tickled my fancy in over 40 years (hot wheels, matchbox cars, H.O. cars, dolls, games), it leaves you scratching your head looking for room everytime you open a closet or find a new place to start storing stuff......
  • great question. I definitely am in the same boat Mike was except I am still in that boat. As much as I try to maintain focus, I still wander. I started with Topps only, 1954 and later, built some pretty decent sets on the PSA registry but changed direction to what it is currently. However, as I get into the hobby more and more, I find myself becoming interested in HOFers from all eras, pre-30s, more obscure issues from pre-1910 etc. I spend a bit of time on the "Old Cardboard" site and it definitely opened my eyes to some sets I never thought about. So, basically what I have done lately is look for cards, mostly pre-1950, from many different sets. But, at the end of the day, it may be that my only focus ends up being collecting cards from all eras and just enjoying it and not being obssesed with set building. There's a ton of interesting stuff out there and about the only thing I can say is that I avoid anything modern. All the raving about Turkey Red, Triple Threads, Bowman Chrome etc. just does not interest me at all.
