Got a couple of PSA DNA Quick Opinions Today

On two of my pride and joys of my collection, my Mickey Mantle baseball and my Ted Williams baseball. I bought the Mickey Mantle off of TJ Schwartz who writes for Tuff Stuff and owns Porkys Sports Cards back in '95. The Ted Williams was purchased at a Make A Wish Auction in the same year.

I got both responses back today, my Ted came back as "Likely Genuine" and my Mick came back "Likely Not Genuine". Needless to say, I am highly disapointed that the Mick autograph is not likely real. With the prices of genuine autos of his, it will be a while before I can replace it. I have compared it to several UDA Mantle baseballs and I can see a difference in the moon shape on the M's and a difference in the bottom of the Y. I know people sign different ways, but I have always been suspect of this ball, and thats one reason I had it looked at.

I have emailed TJ in hopes he will either replace the ball or refund me my purchase price. He writes an article called "I'm On Your Side" for Tuff Stuff each month, so hopefully he will stand behind his product and work with me on this.

Has anyone here ever delt with him?

Another side of this story.....I listed both balls on Ebay and listed them NOT FOR SALE in the title. After I got back the PSA opinion, I ended both auctions. About 2 hours later, I got an email from Ebay saying they had removed the Mick listing. PSA must have contacted them about it, but I had removed it before they did. I did a search of it in the completed auctions, it was removed completly from the system. I guess it is good that they are removing any questionable sigs completly.

  • I'd be real surprised if he did anything after 12 years. If he does he is a saint lol. Sorry to hear about the situation.

On his Coa it says he will refund 110% if the purchase price if it is proven beyond a reasonable doubt that it is not 100% authentic. That is why I am trying to get him to work with me. A good dealer will stand behind his autos, that is why I purchased it from him in the first place. I felt he would stand behind his product. Am I wrong in expecting that from him?

I have an auto from Score Board that looks exactly like the Mantle you show on the ball. same thing - likely not genuine. good luck on your replacement or refund.

Do you have to have an Ebay auction to get a quick opinion, or can you just send them a scan?

You actually asked for a refund on an item you purchased 12 years ago?

You have to tell us what he says to that.

Some guys do give lifetime guarantees if they know the item is theirs.

TJ may require that you actually send it into PSA before he will give a refund.

    Here's a PSA/DNA one from a book I have:

    Yes.

ANY reputable dealer that sells an auto as "authentic," makes - at the
very least - an implied warranty, FOREVER.

Many dealers state explicitly in their listings/catalogs, "guaranteed for life."

The subject auto looks bad to me, but that does not mean it is. (I am FAR
from an expert on his sig, but I have bought/sold many.)

He certainly signed with LOTS of variations, but the subject sig looks
    hesitant and "just not right."

Initially the M's looked ok and the Y looks a bit weird. The M's look way too perfect
  • PSA DNA Quick Opinions aren't always accurate, I've had many items signed by players and put on ebay, where the bidder did a PSA DNA Quick Opinion and the item didn't pass. I've even sent in countless items to PSA/DNA where the items failed. Even though the item was witnessed by me in person. Sometimes a player signs so many items that just to get through a signing session their signature tends to sway abit, or is sloppy enough to be deemed a fake, even though it was an original. Now when I get a signature I try get a photo, I carry my digital camera with me at a signing session and get proof.

Thats what I think too. The auto looks almost deliberate, but maybe that is just me.

I guess some of you think expecting a lifetime warranty is too much to expect. I only want to deal with dealers who offer that, especially on items such as this.

I agree with you, but I do agree with them on this. I believe they got this one right.

    Here's an UD Authenticated ball.

I have a ball with a Scoreboard COA - it was purchased around 1992 from the Penney's catalog - he was under contract with them and then went to UD. That was before the glut of forgeries picked up steam.
And if bad - I'm only out 39.95$.

In 1993 - he was charging around 60 bucks - we went to the Nassau Coliseum to get a sig on an item but he was already sold out. Prices have sure gone up! For those who don't know - he doesn't sign anymore.

Playa, it's a "Quick" "Opinion". There is no way to examine a scan thoroughly.

    Mike,

Are you trying to tell me that Mickey Mantle doesn't sign autographs any more? Bummer!
