Going on 4th and 11 is just stupid

Try the FG Dummy.

Then punt. But to go so early in the game on 4th and 11 is moronic. They put NE deep twice, and they didn't have a single first down. Instead of doing that again they go for one of the lowest percentage plays in football.

One thing I've noticed about this game is the Patriots' open field tackling. They get one on one, and they grab the runner's leg and DO NOT LET GO. They have prevented several big plays already. These are the little things people don't notice when they're fawning over Brady.

SD is slowly starting to look like the superior team.

Maybe faster than I thought. Pats D looking softer with each drive.

Bolts are really starting to turn it up.

The wind was why they didn't try the FG. Although their punting game has been good, being this close to the endzone, there was a decent shot at it being a touchback, which would have only been a 10 yard difference if they didn't pick up the 4-11.

I think the call was a result of schottenheimer doing the opposite of his gut instinct.

Given Marty's playoff record coming into this game, that may be a good thing!

This game, though, shows that it really doesn't matter who is "clutch" (Brady, Bill B, Pats) and who is not (Marty). The team with more talent will prevail in the end, and the Bolts are a better team than the Pats right now.

I'll never understand the prevent defense. SD has shut down the Pats all half, and suddenly they go into a prevent shell and allow Brady to pick them apart.

And instead of calling it what it is -- STUPID defense that almost never works -- all the Brady worshippers are going to talk about how he's the most clutch player ever for beating a soft defense and non-existent pass rush like a rented mule.

It's a little of both - but also, the line finally gave Brady decent protection to throw on that last drive.

<< <i>It's a little of both - but also, the line finally gave Brady decent protection to throw on that last drive. >>

Fair enough. But the main reason the O-line gave him protection is because the Chargers stopped doing what worked for them for the first 28 minutes. The bottom line, IMO, is that the final drive was made easy by SD's choice to employ the worst scheme of "defense" ever devised, one that seldom prevents scoring against any NFL team, let alone a proven two-minute offense engineer of Brady's caliber.

I have to think that "Martyball" was flashing back to "The Drive" at the end of the first half. You think he would have learned his lesson about running that defense in the playoffs against a clutch QB in light of what happened to him way back when in Denver.

Agreed. Though I think that last personal foul should have been offsetting.

Brady still looks awful (except for that TD drive gifted to him by the prevent defense).

Do Patriots placekickers ever miss in the playoffs?

    Wonder what Marty's thinking now?

  • I think all punt returners need their heads checked. For all the "cool" highlights of them returning punts for TDs, we need highlights of these idiots giving the ball away. Hester got lucky earlier today since he almost coughed it up twice.
  • SD WR's have 1 reception so far.

Poor pass by Rivers, floating it out there just high enough for the pick!

On one hand, if the Pats win, it would be easy to say the better team wouldn't win. But in reality, the better TEAM would have won, if not the team that dominated the stat sheet but shot itself in the foot repeatedly.

They're doing everything they can to lose this game. It's simple. Drop back and hand LT the ball...

So apparently, the Pats just punted and they were trying to draw SD offside first. The CBS announcers said it was the "right call" to punt.

They were at the San Diego 42. If they were intending to punt if they didn't draw the Chargers offside -- given where they were on the field, WHY WASTE A TIME OUT to punt?? They would have been better off, at that spot on the field, to take the delay of game and avoid burning a time out they could desperately need later.

So if they mention that punting was the right decision, why not say wasting a time out was a bad one?

    More Chargers self-destruction.

KNOCK THE BALL DOWN. IT WAS 4TH DOWN. DON'T INTERCEPT IT.

The Chargers should be winning in a blowout except for their stupid mistakes. And ultimately, that's why the Patriots win so much in the postseason. Even without their best stuff, they just don't beat themselves.

They are already talking about St. Tom and all his fourth quarter comebacks, ignoring the fact that this one is being giftwrapped by Charger stupidity. I think I'm going to puke.

Let me guess: Marty's going to stop rushing the QB in this situation again, and they'll get picked apart. Brady's crumbled like a house of cards under pressure tonight, but he'll kill you without it.
  • Poor coaching, poor receiving, bonehead penaltys, and Tom Brady lurking. Not a recipe for success.

See? 3rd and 10, get no pressure on him, and get killed.

Looks like an all-wild card matchup next Sunday for the AFC Championship. Peyton's Revenge?

NEVER bet against the Patriots in January. NEVER.

As you can see today, even when they are by far the lesser team, they stay in it if not win. They don't self-destruct like the Colts have often done, and not like Marty always does.
  • rivers gets hit after the whistle. that would have a personal foul if brady was the qb

  • << <i>NEVER bet against the Patriots in January. NEVER. >>

That's sound advice. A 12-1 Brady playoff record is tough to go against.

Sure. The league wants its Golden Boy to keep going. Looks like they got it.
  • How the heck do the Chargers lose this game? Well I guess we all know.

Somehow, that team just doesn't lose in January even when they should get destroyed like today.

Like I said before -- there are rosters with much more talent but arguably no better TEAMS in the league. This team regularly wins games that no other team in the league would win. No other team can win so many games that they probably should lose.
  • Oh one last thing. That unnecessary bonehead move going for it on 4th and 11 which failed and left NE in good field position that resulted in a FG for them? It was the difference in the game.

Yes I realize it was very early in the game, but still, you get my drift.
