Biggest thrill of my collecting career - just finished my 1957 set!!

With the arrival of this:

I am now done with my '57 set! It may be low-grade, but that's the way I truly like 'em. I'm so stoked! I started the set in earnest around five years ago, and was hoping to finish the set at the Anaheim National this past summer. Alas, I left the show still needing two cards. Picked up #283 Wes Covington pretty quick, but couldn't find a Richardson for the price I wanted to pay. Finally won one last week, and now it's here. I checked the entire set for any gremlin activity (you guys know what I mean - you think you're done, only to find a hole or two you didn't think was there) and thankfully there were no missing cards. I'm still chasing the 4/5 Bazooka checklist, the 3/4 and 4/5 Big Blony checklists, the Lucky Penny card, and three of the four contest cards, but I'm not officially counting those as part of the numbered set.

Anyhow, thought I'd share my excitement with the rest of you guys. At some point, I'll be adding another impossible quest, perhaps '63 Topps or '53 Bowman Color. Or maybe I'll just finish up some of the stuff I'm already close on.

Always cool to see a board member finish a long quest image

Pretty much my favorite Topps set of the '50's (the '54 gives it a run.)

As for the condition, my "Willie Mays in a snowstorm" and Clemente with two notches in the side salute you. Cards from this set present well with anything short of a bullet hole image

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Wow, way to go. My brother is just finishing up his 63 topps and is starting on the 57 topps. He's already decided not to include the check lists as they are VERY expensive, but he may change his mind later. Again, congrats, Sonny

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Congrats I am at about 74% now and probably wont finish before '08. I have been upgrading and adding as I go to hopefully finish the set with the grade I want. I havent decided on the CL and contest cards yet but for now wont even think about them.

  • Nice job!! My favorite set from the 50's. I am five cards short on my basic set and am also trying to complete the master set. I recently sent in 25 57's to PSA including the 4 contest cards, 3 checklists and 4 of the five cards I need to complete my set. Looking for a graded #45 Carl Furillo to finish of the basic set, then I hope to upgade all of my PSA 4, 5 and 6's.

It had been a while since I sat down and took the time to look at each card in the set, so I did that last night as well. Although there are many cool pictures in the set, for some reason this one is my favorite. This is a borrowed pic.

The Valo has a lot of fans around here. I haven't made a thorough study of the set, but from what I've seen, I really love the Juan Pizarro card.
  • What a great accomplishment. Definitely one of my favorite sets. How did you come about most of the cards? Ebay? Local shops? I've toyed with the idea of starting either a '57, '60, '61 or '64 set (not sure I could pick just one of those, though) but I'm not sure how successful I'd be due to the fact that there's no good local shops here, making ebay my only likely option.

Ebay is probably a better option than many local card shops.

Congrats on your '57 set TNP777! I've barely begun mine. Yep, that 4th series is fun to work on - quite a challenge. image
