my first ever English four pence purchase

I attended the New york international numismatic convention today and was struck by the beauty and history of a coin. Being the impulsive fool I am I snatched it up.

I
t is labeled as a Henry V 1413-22 (mullet on shoulder)
I took it around to a few other tables and asked their opinion on the coin. All of the responses we positive. Now I present it to the harsher critics.
So let me know how did I fare for a $600 shot in the dark?

Looks nice, I would grade aVF. I don't have a 06 or 07 Spink so I'm not sure on the price.
  • The dealers I showed it to all put it in the VF range also. A few dealers pulled out reference books and 170 -300 (british)was the range for this type coin.
The internet only has sparse info and I would like to learn more on the subject of four pense/groats.

There is a book called "Medieval English Groats" by Ivan Buck. I used to have a few but sold all before
Henry VII (1485-1509) to focus on pennies. I'll scan what I have so you can see some of the later period.

Here's the book at Mike Vosper's site. Text It also has a link with some good information on groats.

Instead on scanning mine I did a search on CNG. There are 3 sections with a total of 316 coins.
  • Thanks for all the info.
I am very keen on buying an nobel from the same period as my groat. This helps greatly
I see I just missed one that was listed on the siteimage
