Absolutely Brutal!

Ok, now I figured I would be lucky to get anything above an 8 on the 1981 Brett Fleer, but to get an 8 on a sweet-looking David Wright from 2005? I'd have never sent the thing in if it didn't look awesome under the glass. I knew the Pujols and Puckett cards were sure-fire 10's (well, prayed they'd be...) The same problem with the 1981 Donruss Nolan Ryan - perfect center and sharp corners, sometimes I am just puzzled by this. Also, since I will never be able to afford the awesome 1953 Bowman Color Mantle, I am satisfied with having the reprint on my desk to look at. But the reall reaming happened on the '87 Clemens, it was the best fo a bunch I have had for almost 20 years now and figured it'd be a keeper as an 8 (I am not in this to get rich. obviously) but my eyes cannot be THAT bad. Arrrghh.. best of luvk to all of you waiting on yours.

A little OT, but one thing I would consider in the future is not using your vouchers to grade low-dollar cards. You can usually find someone on these boards to piggyback with if you have post-1980 stuff to grade, and that leaves the vouchers available for more valuable cards.

The David Wright almost surely has a small scratch in the gloss. You probably won't be able to see it through the slab, but if you cracked it I bet you'd see it on there somewhere.

Sorry you're bummed, and better luck next time.
  • Good turnaround, though.

  • I absolutely love sending in submissions (some life, huh?) I select cards, inspect them with a 10x's under halogen light, sleeve 'em for while, repeat the process, etc. Then I guess the grades and package them up. Of all the cards I have had graded (700+), the only two I sent in that I was "certain" were lower grades were checklists for '57 baseball (a 4 and a 5). Now, I have gotten pretty good and would estimate that I am about 80% accurate in my grading. However I just got my recent submission - 50' and early 60's back. I am generally pleased, but two cards actually mystify me - one 54 Bowman that I had thought was between a 7 and 8 was graded a 3!!!! A 57 common that I thought was a solid 7 came back a 4. Certainly I am not above missing some nuance of condition, but to miss something so dramatic as to warrant a 3 and a 4 is a real concern. I am actually eager to get my slabs back, and to heck with the Brock rookie 8 and the Killibrew 8, etc. - I want to see the 54 B Shea 3 and the 57 T Torgeson 4!!!! That in a horribly preverse way is as interesting as getting the good grades.

So I have come to know that brutal submissions are the cost of participating in the grading process. One thing is certain - everybody gets disappointed. But on the whole, it really is fun to play the game.
  • I agree, and since I only send in maybe 15 a year it's not going to get me wealthy, but I get to see my favorite cards slabbed. And no matter how brutal, I wouldn't line up for this pounding from any other company.
