Topps pack history...

I know that pre 1974 Topps cards were issued by series. When they released these packs, did they ONLY contain cards from that series, or were they mix them with the earlier series cards?

i.e.
If you bought a pack of 1962 Topps baseball from Series 2, would it contain ONLY Series 2 cards (#110-196), or would it have cards from both Series 1 and Series 2 (#1-196)?

    Topps did not mix their series' as far as I know. If you bought a pack with a high number series, it would be just high numbers, etc..

    topps did release multiple series packs , 1/2 , 3/4 and 5/6 . for these 2 series packs , I have opened some early 70's and they consited of 5 cards on 1 side from 1 series and 5 on the other from the following series. there are also 5/6/7 for 1970 that I know of . and racks have all sorts of crazy combinations

    What packcollector said. I have a 1973 rack pack with series 2 cards in the first two panels and series 3 cards in the last panel and a 1972 rack pack with a mix of series 1 & 2 cards. I've also seen 1972 wax packs that were a mix of Series 1 & 2 cards, and the 1970 high series packs as well.

    Up until '72 they released the 7th series late in the summer. Most drug stores just stopped ordering with the kids going back to school, and moved onto football in the fall. If I recall correctly in '73 they staggard them. In '74 they got rid of the series release altogether.

    Correct me if my memory has this wrong.

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

    I've never seen a 7th series pack after 1970. The latest series in 72 to my knowledge was the sixth series, and in 1973 it was the fifth series.

    A look through Beckett and Krause stuff, from 1960 - 1973:

    1973 = 4 series
    1972 = 6 series
    1971 = 4 series
    1970 = 5 series
    1969 = 5 series
    1968 = 2 series
    1967 = 6 series
    1966 = 6 series
    1965 = 4 series
    1964 = 4 series
    1963 = 6 series
    1962 = 7 series
    1961 = 4 series
    1960 = 3 series

    These numbers seem off with a quick Ebay scan. Can anyone correct me here? Did Topps do 7 series each year?

    1970 & 1973 are definitely incorrect. The Schmidt RC in 1973 is from the 5th Series and 1970 had 7 series for sure. 1972 is correct, same with 1971 (to my knowledge). Not sure on the 60s series, I'm not usually able to afford those packs anyway, LOL!
