Can anyone tell me what the telltale signs of a counterfeit 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan would be?

One of my co-workers has a friend that happened to be browsing eBay and she decided to buy him a Nolan Ryan Rookie (I wish I had a friend like that!). He wants me to look at it when she gives it to him but I am not that familiar with counterfeit signs for this card. I am familiar with the print dots being a dead giveaway. Any help would be appreciated! image

Thanks,

Scott

  • Mine was rejected for being ceramic.

-I agree with Jeff, the back should be a solid yellow, no dots.

Oops, I did not realize the purchase was already made. I would check for any small lettering and see if the appear to be tiny dots and and not a solid line.

One easy way would be to take a 10X loupe and look at the letters in the 1968 rookie stars - the "red" and the "black" in the numbers and letters should be SOLID - in the fake, since it was reproduced appear as PRINT DOTS.

Many times the colors are off a bit also and the back may be artificially aged with a water color wash or coffee.

With respect to the colors - check the letters and numbers - if they're not red - 1968 e.g. - and appear more of an orange - it may be fake.
