Troy Smith may drop out of first round of NFL draft

Troy Smith's performance Monday night might have dropped him out of the first round of the NFL Draft. Notre Dame's Brady Quinn and LSU's JaMarcus Russell are projected as the top two quarterbacks in the draft. Smith was at the bottom of a group of second-tier candidates that includes Louisville's Brian Brohm, Michigan State's Drew Stanton and Hawaii's Colt Brennan. Brohm and Brennan are juniors who have yet to declare for the draft but are expected to do so.

I think many people thought this while watching the game and didn't need the Post's opinion. Quite the opposite of the BCS title game last year!

Troy Smith's performance reminded me alot of another overhyped Heisman QB winner who was exposed in his final college game which also happened to be for the national championship. Can you say Gino Torretta.

Vinny Testaverde, anyone? Something about Miami QBs winning the Heisman, I guess...

Okay, Testaverde wasn't a total bust (though his first few years with the Bucs were pretty bad), but he hardly lived up to the Heisman potential. Certainly a lot of other highly touted QBs busted a lot more than Vinny (including Torretta), but still...

No Heisman but surely overhyped, was exposed as well in his last game= Ken Dorsey.

Testaverde is lucky to be alive let alone being pretty bad with the Yucs early on, that team was AWFUL!!

Im not a big believer of a National Championship game setting the bar for a top picks draft position, looking over the supposed top picks of the draft I believe Smith will be taken in the first round.
  • Smith will be a star - in the CFL

now Monday nite cannot be totally blamed solely on Troy Smith. The kid was running for his life for quite a few plays. They couldn't block for him.
  • I agree with goose, Troy Smith is quality.........and quality belongs in the NFL.........one game dont decide

The loss was not Smith's fault. Good grief Quinn hit 50% of his passes against SC and how did ND do. And of course the ND haters unloaded and blamed Quinn. Smith like another QB will be no Ken Dorsey.

Considering all the crappy players that have won the Heisman over the years, Vinny Testaverde ended up being one of the best ones. Since 1982 there is 1 person that locked down the HOF (Barry Sanders) and a couple other guys with decent careers.
  • Vinny rocks........... I agree, Vinny is underated in my book, and so is Warren Moon now that I am at........

If he falls that far the, Chiefs should be contracted for not picking him up when he's still there in the 2nd.

  • Smith certainly didn't help himself Monday, but as long as Calvin Johnson's name is on the draft list, everyone else will be drafted somewhere south of #1! That's the best receiver (and person) I've seen coming out of college in quite some time.

    Brady who?

Not to quibble, but I think Tim Brown has locked down a plaque in Canton as well. But your point is well taken, you get Brown and Sanders and you're immediately in Charles Woodson, Hershel Walker territory.

I couldn't agree more. CJ may become a bust for all we know but he's certainly the best receiver to come out of college in the 20+ years that I've been following it. As a Raider fan, I wish they would trade Moss and Porter for a decent veteran QB and draft Johnson. Then again, if anyone could mess up Johnson's career, Al Davis and the Raiders certainly could, and Matt Millen would somehow find a way to mess it up as well I'm sure. But he is something to behold. The best physical attributes at 6' 5" with a 45" leap, 4.4 speed, great athletisicm and wonderful hands. Plus, based on all the testimonials and the way I've seen him carry himself, seems like a class act all the way. The TOTAL package that no receiver has ever come close to boasting. Then again, he has to prove it on the field. Perhaps, it's due to the recent nature of his collegiate career but I can't remember being more impressed with a college player at any position. >>

Best in the last 20 years? Come on now. There is even a solid arguement he isn't the best of this draft class. In the games I've seen of Georgia Tech's, he wasn't all he was hyped up to be. I see Dwayne Jarrett as the reciever with better hands, and having played in a much tougher conference, a better player overall. But, that's just my personal opinion. Certainly, Calvin Johnson is a good wideout. But best in 20 years?

Yeah, they were saying the same about another USC grad, Keyshawn Johnson image

FWIW-Kiper has Calvin #1 (overall, not just WRs), DeWayne #14. Another service has Calvin #2, DeWayne #21. I make no pretense of knowing who tbe best WR was in the last 20 years.

I'd take the Georgia Tech kid over Jarrett any day...solely because I have never seen him taunt opposing players and act like a jackass.
  • I have lived in So Cal for some time now and see a lot of SC games. GT's Calvin Johnson is the best WR in the draft this year! After watching football for so many years, you can see the Jerry Rice types and the TO types coming. CJ is a Tim Brown or Jerry Rice type with better skills and physical tools! These days you have to evaluate the character of the player as much as anything else.

I think Jarrett is the better of the two receivers, and I also think either Jarrett or C J will be hard pressed to put up better # 's than Marquis Colston and no where close to Randy Moss rookie #'s as well.
