Hmm, obv. does not appear proof, the reverse prooflike. A lot of rim contact on the obv. and sl. friction, etc. I will guess MS64 tops but would guess 63 as the obv. cheek, etc. not quite there for a higher grade - this is a good one.

Oh my! Gold is hard to image, isn't it?

I'll bet the price on this beauty has gone up (if it was ever accurate) from what my 4th edition of Krause 19th Century coins has it listed at.image

Caveat: I suck at grading gold.

I LOVE the reverse... not so much a fan of the obverse.

My initial guess was AU58 because of what looks like wear along the veil on the obverse. But since everyone is guessing high MS, I assume that's just strike?

I'll go MS63 (the reverse looks 65-66 to me, but the 2nd picture makes it seem like a fair amount of chatter to the left of vicky).

P.S. Yes, NGC slabs SUCK for photography, but your pics turned out quite nicely. image

    Interesting comments and grades image

This is the range of guesses so far: AU58, MS61, MS62, MS63, MS64, MS65 and PR66. Pretty wide spread. I'll post later tonight when I'm home with the grade that NGC assigned it. Thanks for all the replies guys!

edited to add ziggy's MS62 to the range.

I'd say it's about a 62. But I can't grade these very well, plus I'm only just starting to really learn British coinage.

One thing I learned was that these coins have a medallic allignment. Both the Obverse and Reverse are at the same rotation. Unlike US coins where the Reverse is upside down compared to the Obverse. Kind of neat.
